Free skates are being held Friday, Sep- tember 11 from 8-9:30 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 13 from 3-4:30 p.m. at the Maitland Recreation Centre. "We welcome anyone who wants to come out for those skates and who is in- terested in trying out," he said. "We want players that want to try out for the team. We only have so many skates and we want to get a look at some guys." Another free skate has been scheduled for Sept. 20 from 3-4:30 p.m. at the MRC, and Bazinet said there will also be a hand- ful of exhibition games to round out the pre -season training, be- ginning at home against the Clin- ton Radars Sept. 19. "This way it gives me a better way of seeing a guy in a game situation," he said. "Hopefully by then we'll have a good idea of what we want to go with." Theepuck drops at 7:30 p.m. Meanwhile, Bazinet said the average age of the team is getting lower each year, as more and more younger players have their names added to the roster. He said the Pirates are generally looking for players 21 and older, though excep- tions have been made for players shy of that mark. "If he's good enough for our squad, we' 11 take him," he said. There will be a few holes to fill on this year's Pirate lineup, especially behind the blue line, as Mike Gill - the team's best defenceman moves to varsity hockey. "He's trying out for Ryerson," Bazinet said. "And I don't think he's going to have a problem making it." Returning from the injured list this year is Jesse Johnston - a solid player who has a huge physical presence on the ice. "He's not a big guy, but he plays like he's 6'8 and 240 pounds," Bazinet said. "It will be nice to have him again full-time." About 50 invitations have been mailed out to this year's prospects .and the team hopes to have at least 30-35 of those show up in skates on the l 1 th. Bazinet said he expects about six goal - tenders to be at the camp, and while last year's lineup will be returning, there are no guarantees on the final decision. "We want to sign the best possible team we can. In the past, we've made a cut on a better player when we stuck with a local guy," he said. "We're going to go the other way. So far, pre -season buzz has been good for the senior 'A' team, and Bazinet said he hopes to be able to assemble a crew that will be together for at least three or four years. "A lot of the guys on the team want to win," he said. "They're just itching to go. Everyone is interested and that's the key thing." Sailors continue pre -season winning streak against Port Stanley Denny Scott signal -star staff The Goderich Junior 'C' Sailors con- firmed their pre -season win -streak with another victory over the Port Stanley Sailors on September 3. The Sailors struggled through the first two periods, with Port Stanley pacing them through the first 50 min- utes of the game, however Goderich was able to put in a short-handed goal just before the ten minute mark in the third to give them a 4-3 win. Goderich's Grant Alton scored an unassisted goal early in the first, but a Goderich penalty gave Port Stanley the chance it needed to catch up. The second period saw Matt Mc- Clincey score off a pass from Greg Trotter, and Goderich held on to the 2-1 lead until five minutes were left in the period, when Port Stanley tied it up. The Sailors took an early lead in the third with a power -play goal scored by Brendan Thompson, assisted by Chad Woodhouse and McClinchey, but couldn't hold on, as Port Stanley answered with their own power -play marker. With just over Lc.:i minutes left in the 3-3 game, Thompson scored his second goal of the game short-handed, giving Goderich the final boost they needed to keep this game in the win column.
