An inspirational fall tradition is com-
ing up soon in the Town of Goderich, and
this year, organizers hope that Mother
Nature doesn't rain on their parade.
The 29th annual Terry Fox Run is set
- to take place on Sept. 13 across Ontario,
and hundreds of thousands of people are
expected to take part.
"Our goal is to get back to a good-sized
number of participants in Goderich this
year, and we're hoping the weather will
be good," said first-time event coordina-
tor Monique Sykes.
In 2008, a drizzly, grey -covered sky
is thought to have helped decrease par-
ticipation in the annual run f Dr.cancer re-
search by more than 90 per cent. Just 20
people took part in the event, compared
to 220 in 2007.
"It's a rain or shine event, and it's ab-
solutely still important to come out and
take part," Sykes said.
Registration begins at the Kinsmen
Centre in Goderich at noon, before the
run begins at 1 p.m. There is no entry fee.
Pledge sheets are available by contactin 1
Sykes, or online at www.terryfoxrun.
org.
Terry Foxers are asked to contribute
what they can.
The non-competitive Goderich run will
have participants following a marked
route along the outskirts of Goderich.
Sykes said the run may lake about two
hours to complete for walkers, but run-
ners, cyclists and rollerbladers are wel-
come on the wheelchair accessible route.
There will be bottled water and snacks
made available before and after the run at
the Kinsmen Centre.
In 2008, Ontarians donated $11.5 mil-
lion to cancer research through partici-
pating in Terry Fox events.
In the early days of the Marathon of
Hope in 1980, Terry was an unknown
runner and raising money was tough. The
Terry Fox Foundation says what matters
today is what compelled Terry to finish
that 26th mile every day— the knowledge
that nothing is tougher to deal with than
a diagnosis of cancer.
Though not available at the event,
Terry Fox Run t -shirts are available for
purchase online for $17. Sykes said pro-
ceeds from merchandise sales also go di-
rectly to cancer research.

The iconic image of Terry running along
long and lonely roads during the 143
days of his Marathon of Hope does not
convey the full picture of that historic
effort. Tens, hundreds, even thousands
of Canadians lined those very roads
cheering Terry on and taking inspira-
tion from his example.
For more information, or to pick-up a
copy of the Terry Fox Run pledge sheet,
contact Sykes at 519-524-7657. She add-
ed that those unable to take part in the
run are welcome to stop by the Kinsmen
Centre on Sept. 13 to make a donation.
Terry Fox funding has impacted re-
search in many different areas. In the
past 12 years alone, projects investigat-
ing several types of cancer have recieved
a significant influx of Foundation funds,
including breast cancer ($62 million),
lung cancer ($22 million) and prostate
cancer ($41 million).
