The Friends of the Veterans
(FOV) group will be riding into
Goderich next week, putting the
Bluewater Veterans Highway to
good use in support of war heroes.
On Sept. 19, the FOV will under-
take a 131 kilometre Salute Ride
from Owen Sound to Goderich in
an attempt to raise money and sup-
port for the group's main function,
videotaping and compiling a library
of the memories of Canada's war
veterans.
The procession will leave the Fox
Harley-Davidson in Owen Sound
about 10:30 a.m. in the first of two
legs. After a brief stopover and sec-
ond registration process in South-
ampton, the crew will re -assemble
and at noon head into Goderich via
the Bluewater Veterans Highway,
destined for a public barbecue fin-
ish at the Knights of Columbus
Hall on Parsons Court. The ride is
expected to reach the Goderich area
by 1 p.m.
"We are hoping people will line
the parade route and give these
guys a salute," said FOV member
Ray Keeso.
The Salute Ride is open for regis-
tration and currently features motor-
cycles and antique cars. For a fee of
$30, area residents are encouraged
to take part in the event that Keeso
calls a "patriotism pump -up."
"The idea behind the ride is first-
ly a fundraiser for our charity, but
its also to pay recognition and sup-
port the troops who are in the con-
flicts now, and to recognize the vast
sacrifices those troops have made."
he said.
"I'm one of the ones who looked
at the Vietnam war [and found]
what happened to the veterans
when they came back to be distaste-
ful. The kids are over there fighting,
political views aside. They still die
over there everyday, and it doesn't
matter if we should be or shouldn't
be, the fact is these kids have got to
know that we do support that they

are over there, and they are serving
us when they were asked."
The ride also recognizes and pays
tribute to veterans from the Second
World War, Keeso said, and he has
been working on arrangements to
invite local veterans to take part in
a bus during the event.

The FOV is a registered charity
that is compiling an online video li-
brary for educational purposes.
Its mission is to record as many
of the living veterans as possible,
preserving their life history and ser-
vice to Canada, and to raise public
awareness of the importance veter-
ans' lives.
The FOV made numerous na-
tional headlines last week after
president Randy Young made an
impassioned plea to the press and
public for the safe return of more
than 26 hours of veteran footage,
stolen Aug. 29 in Regina along with
$2,50(1 worth of equipment while
the London resident made a quick
stop to ask for directions.
"It's ripping my heart apart,"
Young told Sun Media last week

The theft took place midway
through his western "Legion Tour."
On Sept. 3, Young found a plastic

len.
Keeso said the FOV have been
feverishly paying visits to Canada's
war veterans, particularly those
from the Korean and Second World
War. He said he's been .told some-
where near 500 veterans in Canada
are passing each week, and their
stories go untold.
"I,kn,Qw I can look at their names,
but it doesn't tell their stories," he
said.
He added that now is the perfect
time to involve Canada'§ youth in
the efforts of the FOV, as they call
for submissions as part of their Na-
tional Video -A -Veteran school con-
test.
The FOV is calling for submis-
sions to its second National Video -
