In just her second year playing the
sport, 15 -year-old Jaden Mitchell is
already playing field hockey on a na-
tional level.
The Goderich District Collegiate
Institute student recently returned
from Intercourse, Pennsylvania,
where she and the U-16 Ontario Na-
tional field hockey team played their
way to a second place finish against
the home team.
"ft boiled down to the Pennsylva-
nia team and Ontario U 16," she said.
"They were pretty good."
The 1-0 loss to a national team is
indicative of the tight game Mitchell
plays in net, a position she said car-
ries the most excitement and the most
pressure on the field.
"The adrenaline you get and the im-
pact you have on the game," she said.
"It comes down to the fact you're the
last person on the field so all the pres-
sure is on you."
It is that kind of pressure, she said,
that makes the game so enjoyable.

Ontario, after going through a lengthy

tryout process for the national team.
"I got an invitation to go to a tryout
in January for the national team that
would be to see if you go on to the
Junior Olympics," she said. "We went
every weekend Saturday and Sunday
and there would be six hour practic-
es and every two weeks they would
make certain cuts."
Coached by by Jill and Tara Fer-
nandez both varisty and national field
hockey players, as well as Olympian
Michael Mahood, there was no short-
age of talent to draw from, she said.
After March Break, the final list
was determined to see who would
be going to Argentina and the Junior
Olympics and who would be on the
National team.
"I was put on the B' team so I
didn't get to go overseas this year,"
she said.
However, after competing in the
U.S. Nationals in June, she said she
is ready to work hard to improve her
game to make the 'A' next year.
In the meantime, Mitchell will keep
honing her game as she is trying out
for the GDCI Vikings field hockey
team - a consistent squad that ranks
among the top in the province.
Mitchell said her strength is keep-
ing perspective on the game and .not
losing focus when the scoreboard is
one-sided.
I try and shake it off and act like the
game is 0-0 even if they score," she
said.
Sailors hand Hawks another defeat

The Goderich Jr. 'C' Sailors started a
winning streak with three wins in ex-
hibition action last week.
The Sailors continued their pre-
season with a 3-2 win over the Port
Stanley Sailors on Wednesday, August
26, and continued to fell competitors,
beating the Wingham Ironmen on their
home ice 3-1 on Friday, and the Walk-
erton Jr. 'C' Hawks 6-4 on Sunday.
Walkerton tried to keep the game
close throughout, but few scoring
chances and nearly 50 minutes of pen-
alties had them fall by the wayside in
the second period.
Goderich opened the game with two
quick goals; one by Brendan Thomp-
son, assisted
by Greg

Trotter and William Kelly, and the
second, a power play goal, put in by
Scott Miller, assisted by Brent Alton
and Ben Gowen.
Goderich's second period action in-
cluded a shorthanded goal by Thomp-
son, assisted by Shawn McCall, and a
power play goal by McCall, assisted
by Thompson and Austin Spencer.
In the third, Goderich capitalized
on another powerplay with a goal by
Jamie Miller, assisted by Scott Miller,
and Gowen. Brandon Dykxhoom put
the final goal of the game in shortly
before the end of the third, assisted by
Brent Debruyn and Kelly.
The Sailors' first match -up was
against the Jr. 'D' Port Stanley Sailors,
under former Goderich coach Dale
Howard. Goderich was plagued by
penalties throughout all three peri-
ods, but were able to score one goal in
each.
Port Stanley opened the scoring ear-
ly on, but Evan Ducharme was able to
sneak a goal through before the period
ended, assisted by McClinchey and
Spencer.
Port Stanley netted another goal on
the power play just past the five min-
ute marker. Goderich wouldn't leave
the period down a goal though, and
McClinchey scored his own, with as-
sists from Chad Woodhouse and goal -
tender Deryk Mitchell.
Goderich put the final nail in Port
Stanley's coffin with an early third -pe-
riod, power play goal by Kelly, assist-
ed by McClinchey and Woodhouse.
Goderich left town Aug. 28 to face
the Wingham Ironmen in a 3-1 vic-
tory.
