Signal-Star,Goderich Wednesday, September 2, 2009 - Page 29 Labour Day fastball tourney begins Fridy at Ag Park Ger rs1. Cry signal -star staff Four days. 28 teams and $7,150 on the line. The annual Goderich Labour Day Fastball Tournament is set to bring the mitts and the sticks to Ag Park September 4-7. "This will be our third year of going with the wide open format," said organizer Mike Minim of the Goderich Gators. "Your first two games decide your divisions." New to the lineup this year are teams from Mississauga, Cambridge, Chatham and Port Elgin, as well as the return of the Innerkip Ju- niors. Millian said the mix of new teams and old is getting better as the tournament gains re - known. "We also had about five new teams last year," he said. "The good news is - word is getting out to more teams" The first game determines which division a team will go to. A win sends them to the 'A' and a loss to the 'IV. From there, the second game determines whether they will play 'AA', 'AB', 'BA' or 'BB'. Finals take place Monday, September 7, with some big prize money for the victors of each division. The 'AA' winner gets $1,250, the 'AB' $1,000, `BA' $750 and 'BB' gets $500. He said admission to the tournament has changed this year, with the day pass being scrapped in favour of a $5, all-inclusive charge for the tournament. Kids under 12 are free. There will be beer gardens on-site and food vendors for the hungry and the thirsty in the crowd. The full schedule will also be on dis- play at the Ag Park grandstand. As is tradition, the tournament will open with both Goderich teams playing Friday night. At 7 p.m., the Goderich Orioles will take on the Shakespeare Falcons, immediate- ly followed by the boys in blue, as the Gators face off against the Sheddon Mission. Game two for both local teams are Saturday at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. for the Orioles and Gators respec- tively. A new twist in this year's lineup will see a blast from Goderich past take the diamond. Millian said one team had to back out of the schedule at the last minute, leaving a hole to be filled. A group of local fastball `retirees' and some "other local talent" will be filling that slot. Their first game is Saturday at 11 a.m against the Kitchener Selects. WE ARE NOT t • We help protect what YOU VALUE THE MOST.
