Upcoming youth summit to
be held at Bluewater Shores
Thirty-five senior high school stu-
dents are invited from communities lo-
• cated within the Lake Huron — Georgian
Bay watershed — from Sault Ste Marie
to Parry Sound to Grand Bend - to come
together for a weekend of environmen-
tal education, inspiration, and action
planning. The past two years the sum-
mit was held in Tobermory and Parry
Sound. This year's summit will be held
at the Bluewater Shores Lakefront Re-
sort, on Highway 21 near Bayfield.
This year the event will be held the
weekend of September 25 -27, with a
theme of "Youth in Action... Making
Waves." The summit focuses on issues
important to the water basin as a whole,
such as invasive species and pollution,
as well as issues specific to the area
which is hosting the LHYS. This year's
summit will focus on the linkages and a
healthy collaboration between agricul-
ture and the environment.
The purpose of the youth summit is
to foster a community-based approach
to restoring and protecting the lands
and waters of the Lake Huron -Geor-
gian Bay watershed through education,
awareness and community action. The
students who participate in the summit
return to their home communities and
act as youth ambassadors— encouraging
their fellow students and citizens to un-
dertake stewardship activities that will
benefit the environment. They will also
lead by example by implementing ac-
tivities outlined in their own personal
action plans developed at the summit.
They are encouraged to create aware-
ness about environmental issues that
are relevant to their community, as well
as issues that are a personal interest to
themselves.
In previous years, students have used
the skills and information they obtained
at the youth summit to initiate school -
wide events such as composting pro-
grams, walk to school days and presen-
tations to school assemblies. Students
have also undertaken activities outside
their school by hosting local commu-
nity water festivals, participating in
tree planting/habitat restoration events
and making presentations to municipal
councils.
Each of the students is paired up with
a mentor in their community who pro-
vides them with support and assists
them in finding the resources they will
need to work as a youth ambassador. All
residents in Huron County are encour-
aged to keep an eye out for youth am-
bassadors this coming school year and
provide your support to youth -based
environmental projects.
If you are interested in becoming a
mentor, or being involved with youth -
based projects, please contact Jenni
Boles at youthsummit@huroncounty.
