After the last-minute arrival of the Clelia ll, Tourism Manager
Bob Marshall said now is the time to lock down a spot on the
2010 Great Lakes cruise itinerary.
Town in pursuit of
cruise liner deal
Dominique Milburn
signal -star staff
Goderich tourism numbers
got a- boost last Tuesday as
more than 60 people aboard
the Cruise Ship Clelia II spent
parts of their days taking in the
sights, sounds and greens of the
area.
The Clelia II made an un-
scheduled stop in the Port of
Goderich Aug 25 as part of the
Great Lakes Cruise Company's
Great Lakes golf and culinary
cruise. The 100 -passenger ca-
pacity vessel was originally
destined for a Port Elgin excur-
sion, but dockage and weather
problems made Goderich a
"safer port to call."
"It was good news for Goder-
ich, not so good news for Port
Elgin," said Tourism Manager
Bob Marshall. "That's 60 more
people exploring our town than
we would have otherwise had
this year."
Cruisers aboard Clelia II were
met with a last-minute sight-
seeing package highlighting the
town's rich attractions that in-
cluded tee time at Sunset Golf
Club, heritage and architectural
tour of Goderich and its historic
gaol as well an opportunity to
stop and shop downtown.
With just one day's notice to
draw up an itinerary, Marshall
worked closely with Chamber
of Commerce CEO Judy Craw-
ford and Manatoulin Island
based touring company Lake-
shore Excursions to pull off a
whirlwind morning for tourists.
"Sometimes it's a good thing
to have a tight deadline like that.
Everyone jumped on the band-
wagon, and we had no problem
getting help and assistance from
port management, the elevators,
salt mine, MacDonald Marine—
everyone said, 'sure, what can
we do?' and it just happened,"
Marshall said.
With a successful cruise ship
port -of -call under their belt for
the 2009 season, Marshall is
hopeful that Goderich can tap
back into the market. In the
past, Goderich has linked itself
with various Great Lakes cruise
voyages, but Marshall said the
industry is a hard one to gauge.
"Cruise ships are hard," he
said. "They sometimes come
and go with no rhyme or reason.
We really have to work hard to
wow them."
Thought the Clelia II spent
just more than 12 hours in Snug
Harbour, Marshall called the
experience a "real introduction
to Ontario's west coast," and
has since been working with
the Great Lakes Cruise Com-
pany to get more ships in the
future. He said there is potential
for Goderich to see eight to 10
cruise stops next season if they
can land a deal. •
"The company hasn't set its
2010 schedule yet. This is a
good opportunity for us to keep
up with our sales calls."
Marshall added work is ongo-
ing between Goderich Tourism,
the Chamber of Commerce as
well as Lakeshore Excursions
to attract more cruise business.
