Taste of Huron events sell out at nearly every venue Denny Scott signal -star staff The Taste of Huron Event wrapped up on the weekend, with approximately 1,00 peo- ple attending culinary events throughout the county. "[The festival] went extremely well, we had an exceptional weekend," Jenna Ujiye, tour- ism marketer for the County. of Huron, said. "We ended up almost selling out of tickets for everything, and the food was absolutely de- lectable." The festival ran from August 24-30 and featured celebrity chefs from across Ontario, and welcomed guests from as far away as Georgia, New York, and everywhere in be- tween. "We also had an amazing base of local people who wanted to know what we have in the area," Ujiye said. "It was great to have community players coming to find out what is going on in their own back yard." Taste for Huron included culinary work- shops and a series of dining engagements where experts spoke on everything from us- ing fat in cooking to eating locally. Dubbed the Food for Thought series, it featured guests like Pelee Island Wme Master Walter Schmo- ranz and author Jennifer McLagan. Seminars included lessons on making pre- serves, ethnic cooking, cheese tasting, and cake making. The event generated positive feedback for the county. "We had amazing feedback, everyone I talked to was extremely impressed and very excited," Ujiye said. "A lot of people wanted to hear about local foods to educate them- selves on the different things [the county] has to offer, especially through the Food for Thought series." While the county's tourism department does hope to have a repeat festival next year, it will depend on the availability of funds. "This project was put on through a grant that the Huron Tourism Association and the Heritage and Culture Partnership received," Ujiye said. LIDAR." Examples of those communities are Brus- sels, Carlow and Auburn, where motorists were not slowing down. Think you can get around the radar? Think again. In addition to the LIDAR, the OPP have an- other ace up their sleeve with the latest tech- nology in radar detector -detecting. And it works. "We've already seized nine speed measur- ing warning devices," Soldan said; The fine for having a radar detector is $170 and the police seize and destroy the machine. The message - it's just not worth it, either in dangerous speeds or the cost of getting caught. Off the road, Soldan said there is some con- fusion in different Huron municipalities about the use of all -terrain vehicles, or ATVs - espe- cially on the roads. Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh, Morris - Mu -Merry and South Huron are the only three municipalities in the county that will allow ATV use on secondary roads. "Central Huron did have it, until it was re- cently rescinded," Soldan said. "People still think there is a bylaw for (the municipality.)" The basic requirements of ATV operation are: - no ATV can be legally operated with two people on it - approved helmets must be worn - ATVs must be plated and insured - absolutely no trespassing on private prop- erty The OPP will have ATV patrols on the beach and other areas throughout the county for La- bour Day, he said. Out in the water, the marine unit will be keeping an eye on boaters, making sure they are taking safety on the water seriously. "We will be out in the patrol vessel over the weekend and you can expect to have an equip- ment check," he said. Police will also be checking for sobriety and vehicle operator cards, which will be manda- tory for all watercraft operators in the province as of September 15.
