" This is an horrific event and we all feel such a loss. Yes, there are dangers and we think about it but we stress safety in the workplace quite a bit and have im- plemented a lot of safety measures, policies and procedures. We have been safety oriented but this acci- dent just wakes people up to keep their eyes open and be aware of their environment." Nesbitt had worked both on sur- face and underground at the min- ing facility during his career and served on various work and union committees. His son, Jeff, has been an employee at Sifto for the past few years. "This has been a traumatic expe- rience," Carter said. The Ministry of Labour is still in- vestigating the workplace accident along with certified members of the health and safety committee and employees who attempted to assist Nesbitt. Nesbitt's death sent shock waves through the communities of Blyth and North Huron, said Reeve Neil Vincent. "It's definitely a shock. Murray was very thoughtful. He was a very considerate councillor. He pushed on council for running the township in a "businesslike man- ner," Vincent said. "He wanted us to have a plan for the future, to work on infrastructure for the future but to do it in a conscien- tious manner and watch the budget." Flags in the township were lowered to half mast, McClinchey said. "As a first -term councillor, it was great to have the immense amount of institutional knowledge that came with Murray," he said. Nesbitt was a member of the Masons and the Lions clubs, and a champion of labour who always stood up for staff, McClinchey added. "Like I said, he was an understated guy, but he showed us that everyone can make a difference in their commu- nity. If we can take away anything, it's that anyone can do it. Maybe he will serve as an inspiration." The father of two adult children, Murray had been looking forward to spending more time with his wife. "You know, he was a very young man, his children were grown and he and his wife loved doing things together, they loved travelling," Mc- Clinchey said. As a witness watched from the ground, he heard one of the en- gines begin to sputter and then watched as the plane crashed to the ground north of the airport. Perth OPP with the assistance of the Huron OPP along with the Stratford Fire, Perth East Fire and Shakespeare Fire Departments all converged on the area of dense woods to look • for the plane and pilot. The plane went down approximately 300 meters north of Perth Line 43. Nearly a half an hour later, the pilot was walked out of the bush with the as- sistance of EMS. He had managed to negotiate his way out using a compass. He suffered only minor injuries but was trangported to the Stratford General Hospital as a precaution. The OPP is now working in conjunc- tion with the Transportation Safety Board to investigate the cause of the crash. The area is re -opened to traffic but the investigation remains ongoing.
