Knight forms group to help combat Ugandan attrocities
Each year there are more and more
stories about children in war torn coun-
tries being are abducted from their fam-
ilies and forced to become child sol-
diers. To most Canadians living in our
safe communities, this behaviourseems
remote and unconscionable. However
one Goderich-born Canadian has tak-
en on the cause and is doing his part
to both help child soldiers from- Ugan-
da's twenty-year civil war and bring a
greater level of awareness to the issue
in Canada.
On July 3rd, a team of volunteers
will be heading to Africa to help or-
phans from the recently ended Ugan-
dan civil war, where more than 30,000
children were abducted and forced to
endure unspeakable horrors and serve
as child soldiers. A three year old peace
agreement in Uganda has created an
opportunity for humanitarian agencies
to step in and help these children and
their communities recover.
To help meet this need, a new non-
profit organization called Kirabo Cana-
da was formed by former Goderich res-
ident Calvin Knight. Calvin grew up in
Goderich and still visits frequently. In
2003, he took a year off from his teach-
ing job 'to volunteer in Uganda. Upon
returning to Canada he felt a need for
others to see what he witnessed with
the hope that they too will be changed
and become committed to helping those
in desperate need. Thus Kirabo Canada
was created to give Canadians an op-
portunity to experience a developing
nation while making a difference in the
lives of those disadvantaged.
Calvin will be taking his third expe-
ght.„
