The studio will be offering free classes at the YMCA this fall. Dance class gets toes tapping at YMCA Dominique Milburn signal -star staff As summer draws to a close and school days inch closer, some par- ents may. start to think about the next big thing to keep their kids active and occupied. If you're looking for a new way to educate, inspire, and instill valuable skills into your child's pliable mind, Elizabeth Morgan has a suggestion — dance class. Morgan, founder an director of Expressions Dance Arts (IDA), is teaming up with the YMCA of Goderich-Huron to offer two new dance courses next month fiiee to Y members. Already noted throughout the community for the past three years as the force behind the area's competitive dance, hip-hop and cheer teams, Morgan said she'd like to get even more toes -a: tap- ping this fall. She said the art of dance can sometimes lead to im- measurable strides in confidence, social and artistic skills, and pure fun in youth. "[Encouraging a creative art like dance] is one of the most important things that a parent can do for their child," Morgan said "Kids want to be inspired. Through dance, they learn team work, problem solving and goal setting. "And it's a stress reliever, when they can focus on themselves." A hip-hop style dance class, that will explore areas including break -da ice, is all set, and wait- ing for co-ed registration of kids aged five and up. Morgan calls the class "very America's Best Dance Crew," a nod to the popular reality television dance competition. For those aged nine to 13, an Intro- ductory Dance Class will explore more traditional styles, including jazz, ballet, lyrical, contemporary, musical theatre, cheer, and acro- batics. Running in partnership with rhe Y, these courses are meant to introduce dance to as many area children as possible. For facility members, registration is free, but Morgan added that enrollment may be arranged without mem- bership based on availability. "Part of our EDA mandate is to offer something that's both ac- cessible and affordable," Morgan said. "Phyjcal fitness, nutrition and creative arts are important for children to get into early, and I meet so many kids who just love to dance. This is for them." Based in St. Thomas with a sat- ellite studio in London, EDA has offered competitive dance pro- grams to the Goderich area since 2006. These two new recreation- ally based courses in partnership with the YMCA will run for 12 weeks starting in September, and will repeat again in the winter. Morgan added that second -level courses could be planned based on interest following the first -run. To learn more, or to register, contact the YMCA of Goderich- Huron at 519-524-2125, or call EDA at 519-631-9087. You can also visit them online at www.ex- pressionsdancearts.com. There will also be an informal meet and greet night for parents and prospective dance students on Sept. 2, from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Maitland 'Recitation Centre on Suncoast Drive in Goderich.
