RONA 155 ANGLESEA ST. 519-524-8382 Mon. -Fri. 7:30 am -5:30 pm Saturday 8 am -5:00 pm No chance for Blue Flag after stormy July Gerard Cradles signal -star staff Goderich's three beaches will be barren of blue flags for yet another summer, regardless of the outcome of the next two weeks of water testing. The news was given to Goderich's Evironment Com- mittee earlier this month, after a particularly stormy July increased e -coli levels along Main, St. Christopher's and Rotary Cove Beach. Goderich's Environmental Services Techonologist Jen- nette Walker said in order to make a passing grade for Blue Flag status, there must be fewer than 100 colony - forming units (cfu) of e -coli per 100 millilitres of water for 80 per cent of'the samples taken. Currently, Goderich's beaches have collectively failed six of 22 tests, four of which were in the month of July. "June was really good. Unfortunately, July was not a great month for us," she said. "July was a 50 per cent pass, 50 per cent fail." The highest reading came from samples taken July 7, where the average for Rotary Cove was 1,282 cfu/ l 00mL. The lowest reading of the month was 18 cfu/ 100mL, taken just five days earlier on July 2. The sporadic nature of sampling means samples taken within inches of each other can produce very different results. ' "You could test the same water in the same place, in the same minute and it could be totally different," Walker said. • Each beach has five sampling sites, with the average amount of e -coli calculated for all five making up the geometric mean. • "We take five samples at each one of those sites in ap- proximately waist -deepwater, said Bob Worsell, public health manager at the Huron County Health Unit. "Even though it's five samples, it's one number." Weather has been the single greatest contributor to the high e -coli levels, according to both Wacker and the Health Unit.
