Rookies of the year
The Goderich Junior Rookie 1 baseball club had an impressive 2009 season, capping it off in style by winning all three year-end tournament games in convincing
fashion August 8 in Mitchell. Hitting was the key for this team as they scored 264 runs in 16 games and defensive play improved steadily as the year went on. The
team showed great improvement throughout the season which led to an overall record of 12 wins, two losses and two ties. Team members include Jacob Abbott,
Caden Beattie, Evan Buchanan, Kaleb Connelly, Liam Doherty, Ethan Hewitt, Riley MacPhee, Callum Robinson, Shannon Squire, Carter Thomlinson, Zachary
Widmeyer and Dmitri Wolterbeek. Coaches are Jim Beattie, Darren Connelly and Steve Hewitt.

Past winners went head-to-head for a
battle to the finish this year during the 18th
annual Goderich Triathlon.
2008 Champ Mike Hay took on his sum-
mer -long opponent, 2007 champ Mark
Linseman in a grueling 56 kilometre jaunt
around the Goderich area.
"All summer long, these two have been
racing against each other," said Triathlon
race director Tom Doherty. "Every time,
Mike beat Mark by a hair. I thought he
might this time, too."
But Goderich's swim, cycle, and run
route had a different ending in mind. By a
mere 12 seconds, Linseman took the first -
place title in 2009.
In the end, both men beat the previous
1:58:26 course record set by Hay in 2006.
Linseman now sports a record time of
1:56:03, while Hay sits at 1:56:15.
"For the last 18 years, this has always
been the best day of the year for me," Do-
herty said after the event wound down.
And his goal, to reach an overall contribu-
tion total of $50,000 to the event's benefi-
ciary, Goderich District Collegiate Insti-
tute, has likely been met. Doherty said his
heavy haul of the money box leads him to
believe that proceeds may have exceeded
$3,500. Add that to the $47,400 the Goder-
ich Triathlon has garnered the high school
since 1991.
"We make our donation money from
some community sponsors, and entry fees
and T-shirt sales," Doherty said. "I don't
know yet, but my gut feeling is that it has
been a good year for us and for GDCI."
The 2009 Triathlon welcomed 125 rac-
ers, about 30 more participants this year
over last. For the most part, toherty said
participants are drawn heavily from the
Lonodn area, but Huron County is repre-
sented well in the mix, with racers from
Goderich, Clinton, Seaforth, Wingham,
and Grand Bend.
The Goderich Triathlon has become a
favourite for many area racers. Doherty
said that's thanks in part to the town's all -
skill -level course that winds through some
of the most scenic areas.
This year, solo racers ranged in age from
17 to 62, with some as young as 14 com-
peting in relays. A full results listing will
be posted to the web site, www.goderich.
ca/triathlon, when numbers are tabulated
this fall. Until then, Doherty said it's never
too .early to begin training for 2010.
