AAPS FORD Home of the St.Marys Lincolns 8 the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame Photo by Dominique Milburn The Crawford family, above, have signed on to complete a half -marathon in Barbados this December. They are now focused on reaching their fundraising goal - $50,000 that will go toward arthritis research and treatment. Family walking for arthritis Doininigue Milburn signal -star staff In 1997, Joan Crawford was diagnosed with lupus type arthritis. Devastated, the Hol- mesville-area resident and avid hiker thought her active lifestyle was over. Now 12 years later, Crawford is readying herself for the experience of a lifetime this December when she will take part in a half marathon in Barbados. "I could do anything I wanted to do," she said of her life before the diagnosis. After, she says, it's a matter of weight. "You have to weigh what you want to do with my limits, and ask 'is it manageable?" Joan's diagnosis can be partially attributed to the loss of some of her eyesight. She has also received two replacement knees. In the 12 years since, the mother of four has learned to live with an adjusted lifestyle that often is accompanied by joint pain. It's all part of the reason her goal to walk the half mara- thon is an important and courageous one to meet. That's why her family — husband Bill, sons Jim and Greg and daughters Shelley and Kristen — will join her every step of the way to help stamp out the sometimes debilitating effects through research and treatment by the Canadian Arthritis Society and its Joints In Motion program. • The troupe of six has signed on to take part in the year-end marathon as a fundraising ini- tiative of Joints In Motion. The program al- lows Joints In Motion team members to com- plete a marathon, half marathon, trek, walk or other event at destinations around the world while raising money to fight arthritis. The thing is, each member is required to raise $5,200 for research. But while their requirement to take part collectively sits at $31,200, Joan has upped the ante. "We only have six months to raise the mon- ey, and of course, being me, I raised our fam- ily goal to $50,000," she said. For the next few months, Joan and her fam- ily have planned a buffet of events designed to rally community support. They've been cooking -up hot dogs, hand- ing out flyers, and next month, their sprawling homestead perched alongside the Maitland River will be home to a community pig roast and 10 kilometre trail walk and run. Sunday, September 6, the Crawford's hope to be joined by fellow county residents for the roast dinner through registration and sponsor- ship. Without sponsorship, community mem- bers can plan to attend and take part at a cost of $20 per person. With sponsors, the cost is $15. And, for those who bring in $100 or more, the cost of the meal is free. "We've had a very good response so far for the roast and run;" Joan said, adding the more the merrier. "As long as you preregister so we know how many to expect." Along with the dinner and trail -time, the family will also raffle off a hand stitched quilt, as well as prints from Joan's personal photog- raphy hotography collection. In November, Crawford and her crew will be at it again, this time fundraising through a special fashion show featuring a vintage collection of antique clothing. The event will take place in St. Mary's. "We're not looking for sympathy, we're looking for money," Joan said. She added that all proceeds go towards research, so in many ways, it comes back to everyone. It refers to a group of more than 100 rheumatic diseases and other conditions that can cause pain, stiff- ness and swelling in the joints. Any part of the body can become inflamed or painful from arthritis. Some rheumatic conditions can result in debilitating, even life-threatening complications or may affect other parts of the body including the muscles, bones, and internal organs. In 2005, 75 per cent of Huron County resi- dents reported having at least one long-term chronic condition diagnosed by a health pro- fessional, according to Huron County Health Unit statistics. Arthritis/rheumatism was the most common self-reported chronic health condition in Huron County, followed by high blood pressure.
