Huron County is considering
ways to host the real McGee in its
museum collection.
In making a report to the county's
committee -of -the -whole session
Aug. 11, cultural services director
Beth Ross reports a collection of
Port Albert Air Navigation School
memorabilia, owned by longtime
.history buff Eugene McGee, is
something the museum would like
to add.
The problem, says Ross, is Mc-
Gee is offering up the collection
with the condition that all of it is
permanently on display. The request
for the condition itself is against
county policy. Further, notes Ross,
the county currently does not have
the amount of space needed to dis-
play McGee's vast collection.
"Nobody else in the world has
the collection he does," says Ross
in praise of McGee's memorabilia,
which she notes McGee has been
assembling since the age of 10,
when he lived across the road from
the Port Albert school.
One possible avenue for exhibit-
ing McGee's collection, says Ross,
is the Sky Harbour Gallery located
in the Goderich airport. But, she
adds, such a move would require
some funds from the county since
more space would be required, and
the site is not accessible.
In short, says Ross, her depart-
ment does not have a budget to de-
velop an exhibit.
"Having said that. The collection
is very important to Huron County's
history," she says.
While councillors opted only
to receive Ross's report and not
to commit to funding an exhibit,
Coun. Deb Shewfelt (Goderich)
suggests Ross consider approaching
the Goderich branch of the Royal
Canadian Legion to inquire as to
whether it would be open to host-
ing a permanent exhibit of McGee's
collection.
Ross agreed to follow up on the
idea.
