Elementary students in town will be entering a new
chapter in Goderich's educational history with Victoria
and Robertson Memorial Public School 'students converg-
ing as Goderich Public School September 1.
Construction is well under way at Robertson Memo-
rial, with five new classrooms being built onto the existing
school.
"That consists of primary classrooms, best start class-
rooms and special education programs," said Steve Howe,
communications manager at the Avon Maitland District
School Board.
The project includes three Kindergarten spaces, one
regular classroom and one special education classroom, as
well as a resource room and Best Start area, funded by the
county.
Howe said the construction, which comes at a price tag
of $4,267,515, is being done by Devlan Construction Ltd.
of Guelph.
Work is 50 per cent complete on the 15,000 square -foot
new structure, and Howe said renovations to the existing
building will also be taking place. Those include window
replacement, new doors, lighting, ceilings and ventilation.
The new school will be ready for students in Septem-
ber, 2010. In the meantime, the Grade K-6 students will be
housed at Victoria.
"All of the content required has now been set up in Vic-
toria and is ready to go," Howe said. "As of September 1,
they all become Goderich Public School."
Meanwhile, workers from Norton Builders of London
are getting Goderich District Collegiate Institute ready for
the Grade 7 and 8 students who will be calling the high
school home as a result of a lengthy accommodation re-
view.
Upgrades to guidance and administration areas, fire
alarms, the creation of additional storage space and emer-
gency exits and lighting are all underway and should be
completed within the week, Howe said.
"The whole school will be ready for occupancy by Au-
gust 24," he said. "So staff will be able to go into the build-
ing to get ready for the coming year."
The upgrading of GDCI has a price tag of $888,534.
