Triathlon puts pedals to the metal Sunday
signal -star staff
It is a proud athletic tradition that has for
nearly two decades brought competitors
from all across the region to Goderich. This
year, the 18th Goderich Triathlon will once
again test the mettle of participants in the
water, on the trails and on two wheels Au-
gust 16.
According to triathlon race director Tom
Doherty, a number of previous race winners
are slated to return in 2009, including last
year's winner Mike Hay of Sudbury, 2007's
Mark Linesman of Sarnia and the winningest
female racer, Sheri Fraser of London.

"She's indicated she's coming," he said.
"We're looking at a pretty good field."
Hay holds the course record, with an out-
standing finish time of 1:58:26 in 2006 - a
full five minutes ahead of his closest com-
petitor.
This year's course will be the same as last,
with a one kilometre swim at Goderich's
Main Beach, a 45 km. bicycle round-trip to
Auburn and back and a 10 km. run along the
Maitland Trail.
"Everything should be exactly the same,"
he said. "I've been doing it for 17 years and
we try to keep it pretty much consistent so
racers can compare their time this year."
While Doherty said road construction
may be along the cycling route, a previous
switch to the Maitland Trail for runners has
made it a non -issue for the last leg of the
race.
The triathlon typically brings in about
150 people, and Doherty said that breaks
down to about 80 solo racers and around
20-25 relay teams.
Pre -registration numbers are looking
slightly higher than last year at this time, he
said, and he has his fingers crossed that the
weather is favourable.
The triathlon began as a fundraiser for
Goderich District Collegiate Institute,
and to date, Doherty said they have raised
around $47,000 for the high school athletics
program.
"If we have a good year, we should be
around the $50,000 mark for the school," he
added.
The high school provides a mix of student
and staff volunteers for the race -day activi-
ties, including registration, marshalling and
giving direction out on the race course.
"We expect about 60 from the high
school," Doherty said. "Most of the student
volunteers are out on the course.
"They are hugely valuable, we couldn't
do it without them."
Students are also getting more involved in
the competition itself, he said, as more high
school and university -aged racers take part
either as a team or on their own.
Registration for the race takes place at
the Main Beach Saturday, Aug. 15 from 5-7
p.m. and Sunday morning before the main
event from 6-8:30 a.m.
Race time is nine o'clock sharp.
The web, he said, has helped recruiting
new racers and keep people informed.
"They can download the race form and
see race results from past years," Doherty
said. "Now, about half the forms that come
in are downloaded."
Anyone who wants to preregister can call
Doherty at 519-662-4086 or go online to
www.goderich.ca/triathlon.
