Medical residence may aid recruitment

The Alexandra Marine and General
Hospital (AMGH) medical residence
facility has recently passed its first real
test — livability.
According to AMGH executive admin-
istrator Stephanie Page, the new four-
bedroom facility was home to a healthcare
couple- completing residency and elective
coverage to both the Goderich and Clinton
hospitals during the month of July, and
their review of the home was glowing.
"It's definitely a home away from
home," Page said.
The effort of AMGH and its community
supporters will give the hospital another
step up when it
comes to recruit-
ment. Communities
across the country
are going head-to-
head in the race to
attract badly nt;eded
medical profession-
als, and according to
Page, this latest
stride will up the
ante for Goderich.

ting them here so they can see what we're
all about," she said. "The more attractive
and hassle -free we can make it, the bet-
ter."
Located on Montcalm Street across
from AMGHs sprawling front lawns, the
residence is a step away from hands-on
learning opportune ties for temporary resi-
dents. AMGH also rents an apartment
facility in Goderich's downtown area,
which can house up to three people. The
apartment has primarily been used as
housing for locum physicians, however as
interest in AMGH by healthcare students
increases, Page said the hospital was in
need of more accommodation.
"We've used the downtown apartment
for a number of years, but we got to the
point where we were running out of
space," she said.
AMGH is attracting medical students
from The University of Western Ontario,
University of Toronto, and Queens
University in rising numbers, and the hos-
pital is now working toward establishing
even more work placements with nursing
students. The creation of additional hous-
ing will enable AMGH to accommodate
student placements.
'Transformation work began at the
Montcalm property in February, after the
hospital established an internal budget for
the housing project. The Town of Goderich

and more than 10 community sponsors
also provided additional funding. AMGH
purchased the property in 2005 from Dr.
Mike Dawson, who used the building as
his private practice. The purchase came in
handy for the hospital during the Fire and
Life Safety renovation project, which
completed in 2008. During that time the
unit was used as the Family Practice
Clinic.
The operating cost of the residence will
be partly offset by the accommodation
funding allotment for each medical stu-
dent.
A WELCOMING HOME
Looks can be deceiving, according to
AMGH Director of Support Services
Meribeth Vlemmix. While the Montcalm
residence may not be exuding curb appeal,
it's what's on the inside that makes a
house a home.
Vlemmix coordinated the construction,
renovation and decorating project, and
spent a great deal of her own time on the
details with a welcoming and homey
decor.
"I'm really happy with the way it turned
out. It reflects on us the appearance and
how it looks," she said.
The fully furnished Montcalm residence
has been fitted with four bedrooms, two
bathrooms and laundry facilities. Minor
external and yard work is planned to con-
tinue through the fall.
