ancj Scotland. Though
they are just past the
halfway mark of their
tour, they said what
sets Goderich apart is
how so many people
work together.
"What blows us
away would be the
volunteer community
in Goderich," Mcllroy
said. "You can see this
is important to Goder-
ich."
Clasen said while
anyone can plant flow-
ers, it's another thing
to maintain them.
Goderich has so many
community groups
working together, he
said, the enthusiasm
can be seen not only
in the upkeep of the
gardens, but the water-
front and the heritage
district downtown.
"In some communi-
ties, people just work
together," he said.
"There is a lot of in-
volvement here."

Judges Laura Mcllroy and Jack Clasen are guided around town by Communities
in Bloom members Shelley Peet, Rachel Peet, Ken Hunter and parks superinten-
dent Martin Quinn.
Peet said the dedication of the service clubs
and scores of volunteers is second to none.
"We couldn't do what we do without vol-
unteers and the community," she said.
While the CIB team is 70 strong, member
Ken Hunter said everyone in town deserves
recognition for making a contribution.
"I like to think we have 7,600 volunteers
in town," he said. "Some are just more active
than others."
By the books, Communities in Bloom,
Goderich, have 89 flower beds throughout
town, 118 hanging floral baskets and about
50 planters in the downtown cone. None of
that, Hunter said, could have happened with-
out volunteers.
While the judges were tight-lipped on
which communities had the greenest thumb,
they did say every town they have visited was
different.
'Towns and cities are not so much judged
against each other," she said.
"We compare each town to their full poten-
tial, " Clasen added.
He said programs like the BIA's facade im-
provement grants are a great idea for unify-
ing downtowns and Goderich's Sqaure lends
itself perfectly to a heritage district.
The judges also noted Goderich's envi-
ronmental partnerships, and were most im-
pressed to see Goderich switch off pesticides
and herbicides "successfully and willingly."
The final decision on which community
takes home the title will be handed down in
the fall, Mcllroy said.
Also in the running with Goderich are
Olds, Alberta; Trail, British Columbia; White
Rock, BC; Aylmer and Goderich from On-
tario; Hamilton, New Brunswick; Westport,
Ireland and Dyce,'Scotland.
