action in the Seabreeze/Oldtimers friendly exhibition game July 29 at Ag Park.
Oldtimers win Hanover soccer tourney
On Saturday July 25, the Goder-
ich Oldtimers Soccer Club took to
the pitch at Allan Park and Durham
to compete for the coveted Hanover
Cup. Goderich drove away champi-
ons for the first time in many years
by earning the best tournament record
of three wins and a tie, eight goals for
and two goals against.
Goderich started the day out slow-
ly, battling a young and speedy team
from Chattsworth to a nil -nil draw.
This game was action packed, with
open end-to-end play and brilliant
chances for both sides, yet neither
team could find the score sheet. The
Oldtimers found their scoring touch in
their second game against a talented
Windsor Caboto team, the same team
that beat Goderich in the champion-
ship game of their own tournament
back in June.
This game had a much different re-
sult with the final score 4-1 in favour
of the Goderich squad. Goal scorers
were mid -fielder Rolf FrischKnecht,
and strikers Peter Zembashi, Marty
Salter, and Hassan Chamas. Goderich
keeper Fred Schoemaker also made
several highlight saves to preserve the
convincing victory.
The team's third game was against
fellow league rival Huron United
from Kincardine - perhaps the most
intense game of the day since league
bragging rights were on the line. God-
erich jumped out to a quick two goal
first half lead, with goals by strikers
Zembashi and Salter. Kincardine
scored midway through the second
half to make the game close, but the
Oldtimers prevailed for the 2-1 vic-
tory and the championship but one
win away!
The final game was against host
team Hanover. Goderich dominated
with control and time of position for
the entire game and handed the home
team a 2-0 loss. Had several goal
posts given way to goals, the score
could have easily been much more
lopsided. Goal scorers were striker
Zembashi, his third of the day, and
mid -fielder Leo Van der Voort.
With the exception of a few brief
periods of rain, it was an exceptional
day to play football and an exception-
al result. The Hanover tournament
championship caps an outstanding
first half of the season. Also contrib-
uting to the Goderich victory with
sound defensive play were fullbacks
Peter Shephard, Steve Bidwell, for-
mer Goderich resident Jack Goobie,
Henk Pardys, Mike Strickland, and
Nick Jennings. The midfield was
dominated all day by Gregg Dewin-
ter, Craig Caldwell, Gerd Keller, Au-
relio Henriques and Randy Stoddart.
The victory also marks a sad farewell
to newcomer Salter as he leaves for
permanent residence in Saskatoon.
The team wishes he and his family
many safe and happy adventures in
the prairie province.
League play continues for Goder-
ich August 8, 10:30 a.m. at Ag Park
field against Chattsworth.
Sailors making big changes for season
From NEW, Page 28
goaltending for this upcoming season.
Gethke has been unbelievable between the pipes at the
spring and summer skates. His intensity and unwillingness
to give up on pucks will be a crowd pleaser this season.
Mitchell shows a competitive edge for the Goderich
team that you will see when the pressure is on and the
game is on the line.
Tyler Durst brings an intensity and passion to the game
that will complement our team's style.
Thomas Bedour, a Major Midget 'AAA' Lakers player
last season, will fit in nicely with his intensity on the fore
check and willingness to compete in the tough areas of
the ice.
Dean Reynolds is a terrific addition to the blue line,
Dean's work ethic, strength of character and poise under
pressure is another strong addition.
There are still several roster spots left on the club. With
the expectation of several players looking to become part
of our new hockey program we expect some competitive
excitement at camp as players battle for the remaining po-
sitions.
All interested players should contact Todd Goetz at
todd.goetz@sailorshockey.ca or phone 519-482-1541.
Goderich Junior 'C' Sailors opening home game is Fri-
day, September 18 at 8:30 p.m. at the Maitland Recreation
Centre — Sifto Arena. We guarantee that you will see a
game day environment that will excite all ages of hockey
fans. We will be debuting several fan and family -friendly
activities throughout the game that rival what is done at the
professional levels. These activities will become part of
the norm for Junior 'C' Sailor hockey action in Goderich.
Don't miss out!
