For Bill Wilkinson, Ron Mason and
Scott Garrow of the Lake Huron Hock-
ey School, it's all about giving back to
the community.
The three NCAA hockey coaches
were in town last week helping a group
of 22 players develop both their skills
and their knowledge of the game.
"The whole idea, especially from
Ron and our standpoints is we want to
give something back to the community
we grew up in,' Wilkinson said. "With
a hockey camp everyone can afford."
While the hockey school had a few
local players, many were visiting from
Toronto, Stratford and Kitchener.
Head hockey coach at Wayne State
University, Wilkinson said people were
excited about coming back to the hock-
ey school next year, and that ideally,
he'd like 40 'A' - 'AAA' players to fill
out the roster.
In the meantime, he will be heading
to Europe for another stint behind the
bench, this time coaching Jaca in the
Spanish national hockey league - the
Superliga. He said the job came about
from an old hockey buddy.
"One of the guys that I played col-
lege against played over there," he
said. "He said they were looking for
people... and I wanted to coach, see the
world a bit."
A connection closer to home is Scott
Garrow, who played for Wilkinson at
Western Michigan University.
The Goderich native grew up play-
ing hockey, and said when Mason and
Wilkinson approached him for the
hockey school, it was a perfect chance
to stay connected with his home town.
"It was my pleasure to get back
here... An opportunity to give back to
a place that was very good to me grow-
ing up," he said. "And it is a chance to
spend some time with my grandparents
as well."
Garrow is an assistant coach at Cor-
nell University, and spends much of his
time scouting and developing talent for
the Big Red.
Whether college, junior or minor
level hockey, Garrow said other than
natural ability, there are a few things

he looks for in a good player.
"What we're looking for is how com-
petitive they are. How hard they work'
over the course of a game," he said.
"You can only build a championship
team with character."
For Ron Mason, instinct, effort and a
love of the game are critical in a good
player.
"Some players, no matter how young
or old, just have instinct," he said.
"They're born with it."
Mason is the winningest coach in
NCAA history, with 33 winning sea-
sons out of 36 behind the bench of the
Michigan State Spartans.
"When I was coaching, I never
thought about anything other than the
next game," he said. "It's all about do-
ing your job and following the rules."
Mason was born in Seaforth and
played for the Junior `B' Sailors in
Goderich. He now calls Port Albert
home in the summer and Florida in the
winter.
"This is a great
little community,"
he said. "It's the
world I grew up
in."
