next two weeks.
With the project on a tight budget, there
is always room for volunteer help, Evans
said.
Once the tradesmen are finished with the
electrical and plumbing, there will be op-
portunities for people to help with the fin-
ishing touches, such as trim, painting and
installation of drapes and blinds.
Evans said there is no set timeline for the
project, though it is expected to be ready by
the end of the year.
"We are working carefully and frugally,"
he said. "Economy is more important than
haste."
Andrews said Maple Tree is also
looking for appliances for the new
units, and that any group or individual
who wishes to sponsor an apartment or
appliance for a unit would be making
a big difference for the tenants and the
corporation.
Anyone wishing to get their name on
the wait list for the units, or to help in
any way is asked to call Maple Tree at
519-612-1222.
"Once we start the application pro-
cess, we'll be talking to the people on
the wait list," Andrews said. "A lot of
folks are interested in how to connect."
There are four main criteria for po-
tential tenants. The first is the suitabil-
ity of the accommodation for the per-
son or family. Andrews said the need
of the client (current conditions such
as income level), their circumstances,
merit and responsibility are all part of
the overall consideration.
Andrews said those on the waiting
list will be contacted near the end of
August.
While Evans salutes the two faith
communities for coming together to
address the need for affordable hous-
ing, Andrews said it wouldn't have
been possible without the funding part-
nership of the federal, provincial and
county governments.
She said special thanks needs to be
given to the Town of Goderich for
waiving municipal fees and taxes and
helping with the rezoning of the prop-
erty as well.
The project was delayed at Goderich
Council while neighbours and Maple
Tree worked out an amicable solution
to the issues of fencing, as well as ex-
tending the closing date for the build-
ing itself.
