Redbrick stumps residents

Everything is on schedule with no surprises
- Mayor Deb Shewfelt said he's pleased with
the progress being made on the construction of
the new town hall.
"It's really quite amazing," he said last
week.
However, as the building takes shape with
each week of construction, Shewfelt said the
colour of the new town hall is causing some
confusion for residents.
"I think a few people don't understand the
colour scheme;" he said. `What's why we had
(consulted) heritage locally and with the prov-
ince's heritage people."
The red brick design was given by the On-
tario Heritage Trust to set the new building
apart as separate, while being unified in both
usage and services with old Town Hall.
"The way I summed it up after talking with
the architects is basically to give the impres-
sion of two buildings," Shewfelt said. "But we
know they will be one function."
By making the building on the comer of
West and Waterloo a different colour, Shew-
felt said the distinction of the old town hall
stand's out all the more.
"I think it looks great," he said. `Two build-
ings, one function and where they join will be
all glass at the front."
The extra space will be very much appreci-
ated by town council and staff, who currently
share offices at Goderich Hydro across the
street.
Shewfelt said it is cramped quarters for the
municipal staff, given their ever-expanding
mandate from the provincial government.
"With what's been handed down from the
province, we need space," he said.
Not only do they need space for council
chambers and offices for staff, but he said
there also needs to be quiet space for people
who have more sensitive or personal requests,
such as cemetery and burial arrangements.
• The addition of an elevator in the old town
hall will make both buildings more functional
and accessible he said. Shewfelt added there
are no overruns in the budget for the building,
though council has approved a $101,000 gen-
erator to be installed
during the construc-
tion process.
