What. began as a concept between two of Goderich's
faith communities is quickly becoming a reality as the
Maple Tree Housing Corporation construction ramps
up at 45 Nelson Street.
The Maple Tree•complex was brought about by the
Salvation Army and Bethel Pentecostal as a way to ad-
dress the more than 300 people waiting for affordable
housing in Huron County.
"The highest wait list we have is in Goderich," said
captain Krista Andrews of the Salvation Army.
Right now the building is in the demolition phase,
with all the old fixtures, •walls and insulation being
torn out by Nahuel Painting and General Contracting.
Jorge Parejo of Nahuel said working with old build-
ings no two days are ever the same, as when one job
wraps up another presents itself. The crew has been
fixing and reinforcing floor joists and framing walls
while busy with demolition.
"It's more of a challenge than a problem," he said.
"With old buildings, and old structures, you will al-
ways find more things to do."_
The building will contain 12 units, a mix of one, two
and three bedrooms - the latter created by joining two
of the former suites into one apartment.
Community volunteer Rob Evans said the group
first wanted to maintain all the original fixtures in the
building, to keep with its character however, it was
not viable. All the wiring and insulation are being re-
moved and replaced.
The building's exterior will remain mostly un-
changed, however the two large windows in front and
one in the back will be taken out and six smaller ones
installed.
"There are no major changes to the building itself,"
Evans said. "The exterior and common hallways are
the same. The floor plan is revised in most units."
Once demolition work is completed, plumbing and
electrical crews will move in. Four units are left to be
framed, which Parejo said should be done within the
