Goderich Co-op Gallery features McMullen this August
Longtime Co-op artist Jim
McMullan will be the fea-
tured member artist during
the month of August. Stretch-
ing the boundaries of his usual
subject matter [landscapes,
townscapes, and waterfronts],
McMullan has challenged him-
self to paint portraits, and has
chosen to paint the other art-
ist -members of the Co-op Gal-
lery. As the gallery is always
staffed by its members, visitors
will be able to compare one of
the portraits with the member
on duty that day, while also
enjoying the portraits of our
well-known artists.
'Born and educated in North-
ern Ireland, McMullan showed
superb drawing skills at an
early age. His family moved to
Canada in 1956. Later on, his
love for drawing was. put on
hold when he got married and
raised a family. After the chil-
dren were grown," Jim returned
to his passion for drawing and
painting. Mostly self—taught,
he was privileged to study
with Olive Welsh and Harry
Shreeves. There have been
endless subject matter which
has excited Jim in the past
with various shapes, shadows,
colours and atmosphere. Also,
he has been commissioned
to paint many cottages, land-
scapes and portraits. His paint-
ings always express a realistic
view of the world, as. he is not
interested in fantasy art.
He said he paints to express
his feelings, a response or an
emotion, and often feels like
he must paint a certain scene
or in this case a portrait.
After painting a portrait of
one of his sons and other fam-
ily members, . McMullan de-
cided to cpiptinue with other
portraits. V,Since December
of 2008, Jim has produced 15
portraits of artists of the gal-
lery (including a self-portrait)
finding the members will-
ing to participate and avail-
able. Eleven are painted and
four are graphite drawings.
He begins with basic sketch-
es on paper or canvas, then
when finally comfortable that
his design is going in the right
direction, picks up the paint
brush and using almost always
acrylic paint. This latest jour-
ney exploring portraits, has
taken him to explore the sub-
tleties of painting a face which
is very demanding, and he ad-
mits that he is still learning.
Now more confident, however,
McMullan feels that a painted
portrait is superior to a
photograph as the artist
is able to surpass a photo
and to capture the essence
