The Don Johnston Memorial Slo-Pitch
tournament is set to entertain playersand
spectators this weekend with 26 teams
taking part.
"We ended up pretty good with teams
actually," Trevor Bazinet, organizer of the
tournament said. "We have 16 teams in
the men's division, and 10 in the ladies',
so the tournament should turn out good."
Following the opening pitch ceremony
at 6:45 p.m. Friday, July 31, the tourna-
ment will begin with three consecutive
games.
In the men's division, Goderich team
C.A. Becker will face Kingsbridge on the
hardball diamond, while women's divi-
sion action will see The Babes playing
TTK Transport on the fastball diamond.
At GDCI, the Jokhers are slated to take
on Goderich Bait and Tackle.
All three games will begin at 7 p.m.
At 9 p.m. on Friday, the Parkhouse will
play Seaforth's Strange Brew in the men's
division.
Final games will be played on Sunday
at the Ag Park, with 'C' division finals be-
ginning at 1 p.m., and 'B' and 'A' finals
following.
When asked about the weather, Bazinet
was hopeful.
"We've been very lucky over the years,
we haven't run into any bad weather, so
knock on wood," he said.
Spectators are welcome to the event
free of charge, and the beer gardens will
be open all weekend at the Ag Park grand-
stand.
Orioles 'BB' champs in Brussels Tigers fastball tournament
The Goderich Orioles finally got their
sticks going to take the 'BB' champion-
ship in the Brussels Tigers Fastball Tour-
nament Sunday, July 26, with a big 8-4 .
win over Arthur. The boys in black went
down to Melbourne 3-0 and Monkton 7-0
in Saturday's playdowns.
The Goderich Gators didn't field a team
in Brussels this year, however a number of
Gators lent their talents to the Orioles for
the tournament, including pitcher Mike
Hurd, who threw two complete games for
the O's.
The Orioles have been struggling this
season, with two wins and one tie in 17
games. Their next home game is Tuesday,
August 4, when they will host the Exeter
Braves. Game time is 8:30 p.m. on the
fastball diamond.
