The Goderich Signal-Star, 2009-07-29, Page 13Goderich Signal -Star, Wednesday, July 29, 2009 - Page A13 Local green thumb stumps flora experts with rare rose Denny Scott signal -star staff Towering over its peers at nearly 11 -feet -tall, Lloyd Eisler and Bev Lithgow's Seven Sisters rose bush poses a huge riddle to growers and viewers alike. "No one around here has ever heard of it," Eisler ex- plained. 'The nurseries, horticulturalists, and garden cen- ters all said it didn't exist, but here it is." Having started five years ago as an approximately three- foot -tall plant, the plant has continued to grow, and is now producing unique bouquet -style' roses. The roses are roughly the size of golf balls, and sprout in groups of five to seven making each grouping its own perfect bouquet. A member of the Rose Multiflora sub -set, which is de- noted by climbing abilities as well as multiple bud forma- tions, the flowers can easily be rooted through cuttings, and will root themselves back into the soil they are growing out of, although Lithgow's green thumb seems to be the power behind the petals. "I've given cuts to other people, and they just don't grow the same, and I've got roses all over my yard," she said. The flowers have a short blooming period of approxi- mately two weeks per bud. The flower starts a deep fuschia colour, and slowly becomes an off-white before the bloom expires. According to documentation provided by Lithgow, the flower has oriental origins, being brought of China, through Japan, and then to North America in the late 1800s. Grown as a decorative flower, the plant will climb up and over anything in its path. The flower is classified as a hardiness of five by the United States Department of Agriculture, meaning it can survive in regions where temperatures go now lower than approximately -28 degrees Celsius. Anyone interested in the unique flora phenomenon can contact Eisler and Lithgow at (519)-524-6061.
