Former Goderich physician honoured at university
Former Goderich physician Dr. James
Rourke has recently been awarded an
honorary Doctor of Laws from the Uni-
versity of Western Ontario in recogni-
tion of his long-standing interest in rural
medicine and medical education, and his
recognized leadership at provincial, na-
tional and international levels.
Rourke recieved the title and spoke to
about 300 graduates at the June 10 after-
noon session of Western's 293rd Convo-
cation.
Rourke was an active rural family phy-
sician (including obstetrics and emer-
gency work) in Goderich for 25 years
with his wife and partner, Leslie, whom
he met while studying at Western. Their
practice was one of the first rural teach -
Dr. James Rourke
ing sites for Western.
He was the founding
director of the South-
western Ontario Rural
Regional Medical Ed-
ucation, Research and
Development Unit.
Started in 1997, this
became a strong, inte-
grated undergraduate
and postgraduate ru-
ral and regional medi-
cal education network.
Calling it the opportunity of a lifetime,
the former Goderich family physician
was named Dean of Medicine at Memo-
rial University in St. John's, Newfound-
land in 2003. He previously served as the
assistant dean of Rural Regional Medi-
cine at Western, where he was a professor
in the Department of Family Medicine.
Rourke marked his 25 years of service
to the Goderich medical community with
his final shift at his office on April 2,
2004.
His wife Leslie joined him at Memorial
University practicing and teaching fam-
ily medicine as an associate professor.
Rourke has re-
ceived many hon-
ours and awards.
including the Col-
lege of Family Phy-
sicians of Canada.

Epilepsy Huron -Perth (EHP) will
be back on the streets of Goderich
July 30 and 31 offering up their trade-
mark Gladiola bunches in support of
the non-profit agency.
Since the first string of Glad Days
hit the town in 1997, EHP has been
generating a large percentage of its
annual fundraising needs from the
bulbous sales. This year, though, Su-
zanne Simpson with EHP said the or-
ganization is reaching out to the com-
munity "more than ever" in the face
of a threat of closure.
"This year has been more difficult
than the last, and it gets more and
more difficult every year," she said.
"As most non -profits continue to
struggle, we're getting close to having
to stop services or get ministry fund-
ing."
EHP is tasked with raising $$5,000
independently each year. The figure is
in addition to funding it receives from
United Way agencies of both Huron
and Perth counties. Without perma-
nent funding from the province, EHP
is attempting to make the most of its
main fundraising initiative in 2009.
"We're really pushing for funding,"
Simpson continued. "But aside from
that all we can do is look to the com-
munity for support and volunteers."
Lending support is simple. All it
takes is a vase to house the colourful
Gladioli bunches on sale at the Zehrs
and Wal Mart Plaza and Suncoast
Mall. At a dollar per stem or less,
Simpson said it's a small price that
will in turn, goes a long way.
It's just as easy to lend support. For
nearly 10 years, EHP has welcomed
the volunteer efforts of the same
bunch of 17 Goderich and area flow-
er -power sellers.
"They're a dedicated group. I don't
know what we'd do without them,"
Simpson said, "but we can always
use more."
Throughout the tail end of July
and entire month of August, Gladioli
are sold annually across the country
as part of the national epilepsy Give
Light and Dreams campaign. All
proceeds raised remain in their local
communities to support those affect-
ed by epilepsy, as well as to provide
educational programs to the public.
