"A year ago, everybody was up here staying at Benmiller and everyone wanted to take the mine tour," Fonseca told employees at the Goderich Mine. "As Minister of Tourism at the time, I didn't make the cut." The minister was at the Sifto Salt mining operation to announce the province's latest workplace safety blitz targeting the hazards involved with energized electrical equipment at min- ing operations. During Fonseca's, mine management and local politicians ad- dresses to mine workers, one thing was made clear: The Goderich mine is a world-class leader with an enviable health and safety record. "We're thankful for this opportunity to showcase the Goderich Mine," said man- ager Rowland Howe. "Our safety values guide the decisions we make. With every decision there is one common factor— we've got to do it safely." Both Fonseca and Mitchell treated the Goderich mine to a healthy heap of praise throughout the visit. Her husband, a more than 30 year employee of the mine, Mitch- ell said she felt a personal sense of pride for its accomplishments. "It's really remarkable to look at the work that's done here, the size of the equipment and the amount of product that's generated. It's impressive. It's the world's largest salt mine, and we've very fortunate to have it in our community," she said. The program, designed to protect the peo- ple of Ontario against rabies has been so suc- cessful that many areas of southern Ontario are now free of fox and raccoon rabies. In the Huron County area, the ministry has been active over a number of years with a bait drop program that helps curb rabies in the fox and raccoon populations. Natalie Gorman of the ministry reports that cases of fox -strain rabies have dropped dramatically across Ontario to only 41 cases. in 2008, down from 1,500 before control measures were implemented in 1989, a 97 per centom. `The last confirmed case of raccoon rabies case in the province occurred in September 2005," she said "According to the World Or- ganization for Animal Health, with over two years since the last case of the raccoon strain, Ontario can now confirm that raccoon rabies has been eliminated from the province." The rabies control program is a joint effort that receives input from a variety of partners across Ontario. Regional health units, mu- nicipalities, wildlife rehabilitators, licensed trappers, wildlife control agents and aborigi- nal communities are all key to the continued success o0f Ontario's rabies control pro- IIIff a person is exposed to rabies and does not receive emergency treatment, the disease is always fatal.
