BMO target of armed robbery Dave Sykes signal -star publisher A daring midday robbery netted a thief $1,000 in cash after a suspect walked in to the Bank of Montreal on The Square Tuesday, July 21 around 1:30 p.m. and demand- ed cash from a teller under threat of a weapon. The suspect was arrested less than two hours later in a police takedown near the Sebringville OPP detachment on Highway 8 after the robbery suspect left Goderich in a local taxi headed for Kitchener. Warren Steen, of no fixed ad- dress, is charged with armed robbery and was remanded in custody in Walkerton jail after a brief appearance via video in bail court in Goderich Monday. He will appear in court again Thursday, July 30. Const. Joanna Var. Mierlo of the Huron OPP said that while the suspect threatened use of a weapon in the robbery, none was used or recovered. "It is my understanding that there were some witnesses in the bank and people were inter- viewed, " she said. "There was threat of a weapon but none was recovered or used. It was good that nobody was hurt" For Joel Coulombe of Any- time Taxi in Goderich, what be- gan as routine taxi fare that after- noon turned into anything but a regular ride. The man returned a few minutes later, said he needed to go to Kitchener and paid $150 in cash when told that payment of the $130 fare was required in advance. "He said he had a couple of tough days and asked if I would mind if he got in the rear of the van and laid down," Coulombe said. "He was pretty quiet but when he did speak his tone was low and I couldn't make out what he said. But I never did see a weapon." While driving along Highway 8 outside of Goderich, Coulombe saw police cars making their way towards Goderich and noticed his passenger made a point to stay low in the back seat. Curious about the police presence, Coulombe lowered his steering wheel and began text messaging his backup driver wondering if there was a problem. Over the fol- lowing 30 minutes, he was able to discern from mes- saging his backup and with assistance from his wife, Tammy, that a robbery had taken place on The Square and that his passenger fit the description of the suspect. "Once I was driving through Mitchell I was sure he was the man they were looking for and I became con- cerned;" he said. "He gave no indication that he had a weapon but he wasn't acting quite right." As he approached Sebringville, Coulombe was passed by two or three police cruisers travelling west on High- way 8. They quickly pulled in behind him and he turned up the radio so the passenger, who was laying down in the back seat, wouldn't hear the sirens. "There were police up ahead waiting and soon as I was across from the OPP station I slammed on the breaks and jumped out of the vehicle," he said. "Before my feet hit the pavement, officers were there with guns drawn and there was no incident. He was arrested right there" 1 1 1 1 1 ........• : St Fall( ( Illt'!Ih1L • 551 Huron St. : 273-6780 Show Schedule for July 31st - August 6th The Orphan Nightly M 6:46 & 9:15, matin.. at 2pm Nightly at 7:00 8 9:15, SatfSun/Uonflbas matin..
