When did comics
become serious?
From page 7
Maybe one of the funniest
cartoonists ever is a man very
few publications will pub-
lish.
John Callahan is a quadri-
plegic from Portland, Oregon
who sees the world quite dif-
ferently than those people
not in wheelchairs. Having
lost the use of his feet and
hands, John has developed a
unique sense of humour.
"Sorry Sam," says the bar-
tender to the guy with two
prosthetic hooks for hands.
"You just can't hold your
liquor."
"We've arranged a window
seat for your dog," says the
flight attendant to the blind
man, "so you can enjoy the
view."
Callahan's trademark
humour appears on the cover
of a book of his best car-
• toons. It shows a wheelchair
tipped over in the desert with
some odd imprints trailing
off toward the horizon:
"Saddle up, boys," says the
sheriff to the posse. "He
won't get far on foot."
Cruel? Dark? Bordering
on sick humour? Yes, yes
and maybe. But undeniably
funny.
And therein lies the culprit
that killed comedy in car-
toons. Political correctness.
Years ago a good cartoon had
to make you laugh. That was
the criteria. Today a cartoon
must carry a positive social
message being careful not to
tread on anybody's sensibili-
ties of which we've all devel-
oped our own personal clos-
etful. Before cartoonists
aimed for `hysterical', today
they settle for 'amusing'.
Bad, bland and not worth
scanning.

Communities in Bloom
It can be a gardening challenge to soften up the
area around a hardscape. Paula and Ernie Tafeit at
255 Picton Street West have done a wondeful job of
creating an eye catching focal point at the top of
their driveway. They have included a variety of
colourful perennials and annuals, climbing roses
and a gazing ball. It makes you forget that you are
looking at their driveway! This is the first in a series
of featured local gardens leding up to the 2009
Communities In Bloom competition.
