The CFIA will continue to work
with its partners and stakeholders
towards the goal of slowing its
spread.
The EAB was first discovered in
Windsor, Ontario and Detroit,
Michigan in 2002. It is believed
that it was introduced to North
America from eastern Asia in
wood packing material in the early
1990s, but went undetected until
its population built up to damaging
levels.

The Canadian Food Inspection
Agency (CFIA) is taking action to
slow the spread of the invasive
emerald ash borer (EAB) in
Southwestern Ontario by cutting
off Huron's ash movements.
The CFIA has released an
Infested Place Order for Huron
County that prohibits any move-
ment of ash tree articles and fire-
wood of all species.
"Basically what the order does is
define an area as being regulated
for EAB," said CFIA program
officer Brian Hamilton. "It essen-
tially draws a line saying this is an
area that we deem to be at risk for
having EAB."
Although the EBA has only been
psysically located in the Bayfield
area, Hamilton said the Ministerial
Order affecting all of Huron is a
• •
precautionary measure.
"Even tho we've only found in
Bayfield, past experience shows
that it can spread unnoticed for a
period. We've learned our lesson
and went with a larger area."
Movement of ash articles is the
primary way the beetle has been
spreading to new areas in Ontario.
The EAB poses no risk to human
or animal health.

Although the EAB is a destruc-
tive beetle that has already killed a
large number of ash trees in Ontario
and northeastern United States, it
does not spread quickly on its
own. The CFIA is focusing its
efforts on preventing the move-

of all species - to non -infested
