With the first shovel of dirt clean-
ly out of the way, the CT Scanner
for Huron County project is offi-
cially under construction.
A number of local hospital em-
ployees, board members and politi-
cians were on hand Tuesday, July
14 for the official sod -turning
ceremony at Alexandra Marine
and General Hospital (AMGH) as
the $1.7 million construction and
renovation project begins on the
diagnostic imaging centre that will
house the CT scanner.
Over the past 30 months, mem-
bers of the AMGH Hospital Foun-
dation Board and an army of volun-
teers across the county raised over
$5 million to finance the purchase
of the scanner and required renova-
tions to the hospital's imaging de-
partment.
The AMGH Board of Directors
recently announced that Melloul-
Blamey Construction Inc. was
awarded the contract to build an
addition and undertake the . re-
quired renovations to the hospital's
Diagnostic Imaging Department
to house. the CT Scanner and new
Fluoroscopy and general X-ray
equipment.
As AMGH Board chair Bonnie
LaFontaine turned over the sod on
the county project she called it "an
exciting day" for healthcare in the
county.
"After great deliberation and
excitement, we did it," she said.
"This is a great day and this equip-
ment will benefit all of Huron and
beyond."
The town of Goderich kick start-
ed the campaign with a $1 million
commitment over several years
and Mayor Deb Shewfelt acknowl-
edged that it was a pleasure to pro-
vide the service to residents across
the county.
"We worked together and we
worked as partners for the good of
the broader area," he said. "I am
greatly impressed"
