local greens Friday evening, several

guson were second with 3 wins plus

Mr. 'Jas. Dignan last weelr^''eelebra-
-' ted his fiftieth year in the black-
smithing business in Exeter. Sixty
five years ago Mr: Dignan. learned
:his ratde in the sante place that he
now owns. After learning his _ trade
he left town 'and for fifteen; years he'
worked in London, Tilsonburg, Ham -
=Wool ilton
am-
iiton and other places. Fifty years
ago he returned and he and his bro-
ther John, went into the blacksmith-
ing and woodworking business. For
several years he conducted: a shop
on Main St south of the Ross Taylor
Co, Later he; bought out 'the shop
of Richard Davis and afterwards that
of Mr. Buckingham where he and hie'
son Ed, are now located. Mr.Dig-
nan. has been 'a faithful worker and
has missed very few days from work
in that long period. „His many friends
hope to see hint enjoy, many more
days of health andhappiness..`

SEMI-FINALS
In' the first.pf„the honte•and home
games for the semi -.finals • in the
North Wellington Junior League
played here on Monday between Clin-
ton and Exeter, the home team put
up a great exhibition of ball but lost
out by two runs,. the score being 3-1.
The Clinton team were; supplemented
by three Seaforth players and the
fact that the Exeter boys were able
to hold this combination to three:
runs in the full nine innings empha-
sizes the fact that:, the fans were
treated to sonte.excellent play. Clin-
ton scored their first run °in the third
innings and tallied two ,morein the
fourth. The batters got to Lawson
pretty well but he received some ex-
cellent sitppbrCiit the field. Where
the locals -fell 'down ' s, in the bat- t
ting some of ``the boys being a trifle t
weak with the bigstick. In the.foltrth 0
innings Thontpsoxi'' landed the ball' a
straight back over' the diamond. and A

AUTO ACCIDENT
An auto accident took place Tues-
day at noon on Main St. in front of
the Central Hotel. Mr, Sam Johns
was - driving onto Main street from
James street with a Ford truck when
he was run into by an Overland tour-
ing car driven by Geo. Moir. The
left .front wheel of the truck Was,
broken off and every spoke was brolt-
en front the wheel. The other car
had a lense broken and a fender
bent. Neither of the drivers were
hurt.
A :BUSY SUNDAY
Rev., G. M. Chidley, of the Thames
Road Presbyterian church had a busy
day last Sabbath. Owing to the ill-
ness of Rev: James Foote Mr, Chidley
oo6upied the pulpit of Caven church
in the morning and 'after preaching
to this congregation he motored to
his own church and conducted a set
' vice. He tool: the afternoon appoint-
ment at Kirkton'and, returned to day -

en 'church for the evening service.
Following the evening service he at-
tended a committee meeting at
Thanes Road.

A quiet wedding took 'place on
Wednesday, September 6th, in the
Methodist parsonage, Port Hope,
when Eloise Victoria, eldest daughter
of the Rev. J. W. Baird,wwas married
to Murray Luck, son of Mr. H. W.
Luck, of Brantford. The ceremony
was conducted by the Rev, J. F.
Bait:.d, assisted by Dr. D. E. Martyn,
of Paris. The bride who was given
away by her father, wore a dress of
white georgette over silk, entbroid-
eyed with crystal beads. Her veil
of Brussels net was caught with, or-
ange blossoms' • and she carried a
shower er bouquet of lily of the valley
and roses. After the ceremony Mr,
and Mrs. Luck left for Montreal,
sailing on the Montrose on Friday;: for
England, where the groom is taking
a post -graduate courseat Cambridge,
SUDDEN' DEATH OF EPIIRADI
HEWITT
Mr. Ephraim Hewitt, of town was
stricken suddenly on Tuesday about
noon with 'heart trouble and passed
away withina short, time. Mr.,Hew-
itt although not well was up and
around' as'usual and. he was outside
when stricken. He had been, trou-
bled with his heart for a number of.
years. About two years he suffered
a paralytic stroke and since. that. time
he has not enjoyed good health. His
age was 68 years, 8 months and 1
day. He was born near Kitchener.
For a number of years he farmed
near Anderson, later moving to the
4th line Blanshard. About nine
years ago he moved to` Exeter where
he has been highly respected as =a
citizen and made many friends. He
is survived by his bereaved widow,:
whose maiden name was Sarah Ful
on, and five children, three daugh
ers and two sons, -Mrs. Wm,' ,Lam -
ort, of London, Mrs. H. ,Rowcliffe
nd Mrs. Chas. Godbolt, of town;
ustin, of Detroit and Percyof town,
he funeral will be held on Thursday
fternocn, interment in, the 'Exeter
emetery.
Exeter has, every chance of going into
the finals with 'Owen Sound:: The
return game i:` being played at Clin-
ton to -day Wednesday.
