Former Goderich touch football league teams find new home

The Goderich Fighting Eagles are back on
the gridiron, and making a name for them-
selves in the London Football League after
the demise of the Goderich Touch Foot-
ball League (GTFL) left the team without a
home.
They are joined in the league by fellow
Goderich remnants, the GTFL Heroes, which
draws strongly from the former Goderich
Raiders team, as well as from the former
Stratford GTFL team.
"'That's the biggest rivalry in the league,"
said Fighting Eagle, Andy Martens. His
brother, Sean, captains the Heroes, and said
the rivalry goes back a long way.
Adding fuel to that flame is the fact the
Raiders and the Fighting Eagles were once
the Wolverines.
As of July 5, the bragging rights belong to
the Fighting Eagles, who defeated the He-
roes 28-20 at the St. George's Society Rugby
Fields.
"It was only our second game of the sea-
son," said teammate Ben McLellan. "But it
was a really good game."
Corey Austin made a big catch to score his
second touchdown of the day against the He-
roes, and McLellan said it was a close one.
Meanwhile, the Heroes kept the game close
with two big TDs of their own, both from at
least 60 yards downfield, McLellan said.
This year, the Fighting Eagles have picked
up some varsity talent as well, with the addi-
tion of Luke Thomson to the lineup.
"We picked up the starting quarterback
from Laurier," said McLellan. "He's the only
guy on the team who plays organized foot-
ball."

Fighting Eagles Ben McLellan and Andy
Martens recently joined the London
Football League.
"He's the best football player I've seen
with my own eyes," Martens added. "Every
London team has guys who have played high
school."
As for the game itself, the rules are that of
the CFL, with one exception: no tackling.
That doesn't mean any less intensity.
Instead, McLellan said it changes the strat-
egy of the game. With np tackling, the game
is pretty much straight rushing.
The history of the league goes back 13
years, when former Goderich resident Ken
Staniewski started up the leauge. Teams from
Goderich, Stratford and the surrounding area
were part of the league, which lasted 12 years
however, after the uprights were removed
from the GDCI track, the GTFL no longer
had a place to call home. After a season in
Clinton, the league folded.
"When they yanked out the field goal posts,
that was our demise," said Martens. "We
didn't have a field to play on. Dr. Dawson
tried his hardest to prevent them from taking
out the goal posts"

Family fishing fun
The Falls Reserve Family Fishing derby
was a success this past weekend with 73
entries, 25 of which registered for all three
days. Winners in the 13 and older category
included Jack Snieder, Amber Bourassa
and Thomas Davis. Winners in the 12 and
under category included Craig Everson,
Chasity Messena, and Hannah Day. Chad
Crawford won the award for the smallest
fish. Above is Sarnia -resident Dylan Young
with mother Cristina and dog Tanner trying
to land that elusive bite.
McLellan. said he is still surprised at the
move, considering the long and winning tra-
dition of Vikings football, and hopes enough
people will take interest locally to bring the
GTFL back to Goderich.
However, he added it would be sweet if a
Goderich team took the London champion-
ship.
Anyone looking for more information about
the touch football league can call McLellan at
519-955-5279 or go online to: londonfl.com.
The Fighting Eagles' next game is this Sat-
urday against the MC Rovers. The Heroes'
next game is Sunday, July 19 against Wham-
cliffe Physio Therapy.
The season runs June 27 to October 31.
