complete a pool rescue in about
20 seconds, being at the water-
front provides a new set of chal-
lenges.
"There is increased surveil-
lance, faster rescues, it's a dif-
ferent environment," he said.
"On the beach you might have a
hundred -metre run on the sand,
hundred -metre approach and a
hundred -metre tow."
These increased physical
challenges are only part of the
difference. With more human
traffic on the beach, Bearss said
vigilance is not up to eyesight
alone.
"You learn how to pay at-
tention even when you don't
see something," he said. "Life-
guards don't need to see every-
thing to know what happened."
Because of the success of this
year's challenge, Bearss said
they are already talking about
holding one again next year.
He offered thanks to the vol-
unteer victims who simulated
poolside emergencies as well as
the Canadian Coast Guard for
judging the competition.
