Heinbuch takes home gold at Lifeguard competition Gerard Creo s signal -star staff Keeping swimmers out of danger and providing rescue to those who need it — Goderich's lifeguards live up to their name each and every day on the beach and by the pool. But it's not solitary work. Lifeguard at the YMCA of Goderich- Huron and swimming instructor Ryan Bearss was one of many taking part in a recent lifeguard competition at the Y facility, and said while a single person can respond to many situations, the need for a strong team is critical. "You have to be able to deal as an in- dividual and as part of a team," he said. "And deal with it flawlessly." The lifeguard competition tested . the speed, strength, swimming • abilities and memory. "It was a really fun course," Bearss said. "Probably the best I've taken." With only 18 points difference be- tween the highest score and the lowest, Bearss said it is a good indicator that Goderich's lifeguards are all on the same level. Dani Heinbuch won the day's chal- lenge, and Bearss said she did an im- pressive job. "That's way more than a person would weigh in the water. I was really impressed." Other events included the rescue re- lay, mannequin relay (towing a partner back and forth), treading challenges and weight challenges.
