The American Wind Symphony Or-
chestra sailed into the Port of Goderich
and provided Goderich with a "once in a
lifetime" experience over the weekend.
The barge arrived shortly before 1
p.m. on July 9, easing into the harbour
amid the march of a lone piper, followed
closely by local dignitaries and dozens of
onlookers and flashbulbs.
"What a welcome," founder and Con-
ductor Robert Boudreu said to his first
mate.

sel, the Point -Counterpoint II called God-
erich and area home at one of three of its
Canadian stops of the Great Lakes Tour.
The whirlwind event saw many of the
floating orchestra's 42 young musicians
playing intimate performances across the
community during their stay, including
the main event at the Main Beach July
11, and even a small backyard serenade
at the home of Ken and Bonnie Dunn.
.
"I'm Canadian," said Bourdreau upon
his July 9 arrival, noting his birthplace,
a small rural chunk of Massachusetts.
"My grandmother grew up in Canada.
My great grandfather ran barges on the
St, Lawrence."
"It's like coming home — this is my
country."
The event was backed and supported
by a committed group of town council-
lors, dedicated town staff, enthusiastic
volunteers, generous sponsors and the
community at large.

Despite a slight
chill in the air, more
than 1,000 are es-
timated to have at-
tended the Saturday
evening concert.
Thirty-two area
families played host
to the 42 travelling musicians who hail
from places across the globe.
"This is my 53rd family," said the live-
ly Boudreau. "More than 2,500 young
people have sailed on his hull.
This was the group's first stop ever in
Goderich. Musicians on french horns,
tubas and trombones played in time to
the "world premier" of Toone, a piece by
Japanese composer Wada. Maestro Bou-
dreau entertained the crowd with stories
behind the pieces his orchestra played.
"The musicians and crew said they
were blown away by Goderich's hos-
pitality," said Wanda Keith, festival
and special events coordinator with the
Town of Goderich. "We were delighted
with the way it turned out. Our little joke
was our slogan — Catch The Wind -- we
didn't expect that much wind, but what
an evening!"
