The Sarnia Bluewater PT Cruisers had 12 members show up for their annual cruising event held July
11. The group toured the beach and The Square, and held a Chinese auction at Lion's Harbour Park,
raising $525 for the Affordable Housing development in Goderich. The group thanks all the mer-
chants that made donations to their cause.

Central Huron's Reeve is casting
a line for some much-needed farm
aid.
Bert Dykstra made a plea to fel-
low county councillors July 15 to
lobby the provincial and federal lev-
els of government to prop up the ail-
ing beef and pork industries.
Noting a combination of dwin-
dling, demand, a fluctuating dollar
and increasingly stringent import
regulations from Canada's largest
trading partner to the south are pum-
mellingagriculture, Dykstra sug-
gests it is time for the senior levels
of government step in to help.
Dykstra's motion was supported
by a number of those at the table,
several of whom are farmers.
Coun. Bill Dowson (Bluewater),
a pork producer, says beef and pork
producers are in need of attention
since they don't have the powerful
lobbying grOtIPS and supply -man-
agement systems in place that the

entoy.
"Now is the time to help them," he
says.
Coun. Deb Shewfelt (Goderich)
agrees more needs to be done to
help farmers. He suggests the time
has come for county council to form
an ad-hoc committee, comprised of
councillor/farmers to meet with min-
isters at the upcoming Association
of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO)
conference.
"We're depending on the farm in-
dustry to stay strong," says Shewfelt,
adding now that Goderich has lost
its largest employer, Volvo, agricul-

Coun. Joseph Seili (Huron East)
adds the current trend is for fewer
people to choose farming as a voca-
tion
ocetion since there is little if any profit
in it.
"If the trend keeps continuug,
we.won't have (family farms). We'll
have corporate farms," he says.
Council both endorsed Dykstra's
motion and agreed to fonn a com-
mittee 'to meet with ministers at
AMO.
Dowson adds both plans are steps
in the right direction.
"It's never too late to lobby gov-
ernment and keep , them informed
of what situation we're in," he says.
"We need to be there to tell the min-
isters how important agriculture is
all across the board."
