people may have regarding the LHINs them-
selves," said Kelly Gillis, senior director of
planning, integration and community engage-
ment for the South West LHIN.
These public forums will feature an open -
house format Gillis said will allow the public
to participate in a variety of ways. While there's
no requirement to arrive right at the start, Gillis
added the South West LHIN suggests partici-
pants plan a one-hour time commitment.
"We've set it up in four different stations,"
Gillis said. "One is about the LHIN— what it
is and its role. Two more stations will address
trends, and our proposed three-year startegic
plan for health services. In the fourth area, we
will be talking about how we envision services
should be delivered in the future. At all of these,
we'd like to find out what public opinions are."
Throughout July and September, the LHIN
will host a total of 17 sessions across the ser-
vice area, including sessions in Seaforth on
July 23, and Kincardine Sept. 14.
April 1, 2008 marked the completion of the
first full year of LHIN authority in Ontario's
health care system.
In 2(X)6, the Ministry of Health and Long -
Term Care divided the province into 14 regions
or Local Health Integration Networks (more
succinctly known as LHINs) because, it was
thought, people living locally were better able
to plan, fund and integrate health services in
their own communities than people in Toronto.
By April 1, 2007, LHINs took on full responsi-
bility for health services in their communities.
The South West LHIN is a crown agency re-
sponsible for planning, integrating and funding
more than 150 health service providers, includ-
ing hospitals, long-term care homes, mental
health and addiction agencies, community sup-
port services, community health centres and
the South West Community Care Access Cen-
tre. The LHIN covers an area from Lake Erie
to the Bruce Peninsula and is home to nearly
one million people. The 2008/09 health service
provider budget for the South West LHIN is
$1.9 billion.
Bear sightings continue in Huron
So far, he hasn't caused any real
trouble, but he's still hanging around.
Senior Fish and Wildlife specialist,
Bev Stevenson of the MNR Clinton
office said Friday they have received
seven additional Black Bear sightings
in the area. Reported sightings stretch
from the Sunset Beach Road area up to
Kingsbridge.
"I believe the first report last week
was near Sunset Beach, and the reports
gradually moved north through the
week," Ste-
venson said.

lone bear that has been patrolling the
Lake Huron shoreline for more than
a month. Now, wildlife officials have
had nearly 40 reported sightings of the
animal since June 1.
"There are bears almost all through-
out Bruce County, and Huron is kind of
like a spillover area," Stevenson said of
the increasing number of reports over
the course of the last five years.
Stevenson added once a food source
such as field corn matures, the animal
may move along to that area.
Residents and cottagers should keep
garbage in locked containers, remove
bird feeders from their property and
remove food remnants from their bar-
becue grill, an aromatic attraction.

If you find yourself in close contact
with a bear, Stevenson said you should
make loud noises, back away slowly,
and wave arms in the air. You should
not tum and run from a bear.
Unless the bear causes problems,
the ministry will continue to monitor
sightings and educate the public on
how to best deal with the situation to
keep bears off their property.
If an animal breaks into a property
or causes a serious threat or problem,
Stevenson advises contacting 911.
Anyone experiencing bear problems
can report the sighting to the ministry's
Bear Wise Line at 1-866-514-2327
and speak to a ministry official.
Bears are mainly vegetarian and
three-quarters of their diet is restricted
to vegetation but would also include
bird feeders -and compost heaps.
