Rookie MP keeps Huron County connected to Ottawa
With the spring sitting of the legisla-
ture adjourned until September, 1 thought
it a perfect opportunity to sit down with
our newly -minted Member of Parliament,
Ben Lobb to get a first-hand look into
the rookie MP's first months as Huron -
Bruce's representative in Ottawa.
With the first day butterflies behind
him and a spare suit in his office he no
longer worries about his luggage seeing
more of Canada than he has.
As a student, Ben visited the Parlia-
ment Buildings in Ottawa on a school
trip years ago, but to stand on Welling-
ton Street looking up at one of the most
identifiable landmarks in the country
he's humbled that he has the privilege of
working in such a magnificent place.
"It's hard to look up at the Hill and not
be awed by the history it symbolizes,"
said Lobb.
Almost as soon as the sitting of Cana-
da's 40th parliament commenced it was
broadsided first by the Fall Economic
Statement and then by the coalition ca-
per.
Lobb wondered if he would be one of
the shortest serving members of parlia-
ment ever.
He kept his focus on the people in the
riding during this time which helped
him stay grounded and didn't get overly
caught up in the distraction.
During last October's election cam-
paign Lohb's slogan was "Re -connecting
Huron -Bruce to Ottawa".
Lobb shared that he believes that he is
well on his way to reaching that goal on
a few levels.
First and foremost improving the com-
munication between his office and con-
stituents was crucial to keeping infor-
mation flowing to the riding clearly and
consistently.

his two constituency offices in
the riding.

monthly newsletter entitled

boasts 1,0(X) subscribers.
MP Lobb also stressed that he
wants to he an effective member
of government caucus and bring
tangible results to the riding.
In an attempt to try to do things a little
differently, 1,ohh has held nine passport
clinics to he of service to those wishing
to obtain a passport. More clinics will he
planned for the future.
Lohb's passion is in getting out into
the community and engaging the people
in discussion. His energy is contagious.
Whether it's talking to nursing home
residents about the Proud to Be Cana-
dian campaign, or re -connecting with
the grass -root businesses of his home
community, Ben is determined to get the
people in his riding excited about politics
again.
For the short term, it's important to
Lobb that he relays to Huron -Bruce that
the country is in a very strong position
economically compared with other coun-
tries. Weathering the economic slow-
down is job one.
Locally our MP hopes to help those
without a job take advantage of the gov-
ernment's retraining program, and in the
meantime help them get employment in-
surance to see them through.
A long-term and more sweeping goal
is to continue to help make Huron -Bruce

the location of choice for new
business to develop. Keeping it
attractive depends on all levels
of government working togeth-
er to make that happen in as
transparent a way as possible.
Equally important for Ben is
to get results for farmers in the
riding who have been hit hard,
specifically pork producers of
late.
Lohh is open to meet with
groups and individuals in the riding. On
average in a given week his Goderich of-
fice fields 150-200 calls a week.
When the home -renovation program
was rolled out the office received, on av-
erage, 50 calls a day for more informa-
tion. He is encouraged that many are tak-
ing advantage of the program locally.
Lohb also encourages those from his
riding who may visit Ottawa when the
