Benmiller derby part of Family Fishing Week G.rard C signal -star staff This weekend, July 10-12, all anglers are covered in the Province of Ontario, as the Ministry of Natural Resources' Ontario Family Fishing Weekend comes to a lake, river or pond near you. The weekend allows for families to fish anywhere in the province without a licence, allowing first-time anglers a taste of the sport and allowing avid fishermen and women to bring along their friends and family to cast off and reel in the benefits. The Falls Reserve Conservation Area in Benmiller will be hosting a fishing derby throughout the weekend, with a stocked pond full of bass. Natural Resources Interpreter at Falls Reserve, Cassandra Uyl, said this year, the derby will run all three days of Family Fishing Weekend during daylight hours. "_The actual derby will be on Satur- day," she said. "You can fish anywhere, but we're promoting (the derby) at the stocked pond only." While Saturday's derby will feature first, second and third place prizes in the 12 -and -under and 13 -and -over cat- egories, there will be prizes from Fri- day through to Sunday for numerous tagged fish in the pond. ":There are hundreds of fish," she said. "In previous years it was just a one -day event." Fishermen, women and children need to register for the event, but Uyl said that can be done the day of at the park. She said registration includes lunch, however for the hungry angler, extra meal tickets are available, For regular campers and other users of the park, normal admission fees ap- ply. That also applies for anyone fish- ing at the falls. The stocked pond will be for registered anglers only. The cost to register is $30 a family for the three-day event or $20 a day for just Saturday. "The lunch and all the big prizes will be given out Saturday," Uyl said. While the derby is largely a local event, Uyl said visitors from nearby cities often make the trip. "We get people from all over," she said. "Sarnia, Windsor, London, a lot from those three areas." The Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters and Ministry of Natural Resources are advising anglers licence limits still apply. For catch -and -release, there is no limit.
