Annual Summerfest underway July 9
As the remnants of the weekend's potpourri of
arts and crafts vendors are swept away by town
workers, the next big-ticket weekend event is
already setting up in Courthouse Park.
Spread throughout three days, July 9, 10 and 11,
the Goderich Kinsmen Summerfest features five
events and this year, welcomes the sights and
sounds of the Massed Pipe Event sometimes known
as Scottish Flair on The Square.
The festival officially gets underway on Thursday,
combining a Children's Play Fair with the cooling
refreshment tent and popular music by Goodfellas
D.J. Service. Friday, local music makers The Full
Nelsons join the line-up, followed on Saturday by
the Massed Piping Event, CMC Poker Rally and
nighttime musical guests The Tasty Jams.
"We're asking the Goderich and Huron County
communities to come out and support the Kinsmen
Summerfest and other volunteer entities because
the more people we welcome, the more funds are
raised that directly benefit the community,” said
Summerfest chair Elli Cohen.
The popular Summerfest event has been a main-
stay in Goderich for years, and the proceeds it
generates are put into community funding annually.
A portion also goes towards Cystic Fibrosis
research.
New this year, the Gateway Children's Village
Children's Play Fair will include an obsta-
cle course, inflatable bounce tent sea ser-
pent and giant slide and fishing pond
game.
"The idea was to bring more families
down to The Square during the day," said
Cohen. "It adds a good element [for kids
and parents]."
The fair runs daily on The Square from
noon to 8 p.m.
Sometimes called Scottish Flair on The
Square, the ninth annual Massed Band
Event will take place Saturday and fea-
ture players from across southwestern
Ontario. Five pipe bands from the area,
including the Celtic Blue Highlanders and
the Kincardine Scottish Band, will each
take their turn from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. at
Courthouse Park's south end before cul-
minating at 5 p.m.
Bike lovers can take to the open road
Saturday during the Canadian Motorcycle
Cruisers Poker Run. Registration begins
at 11 a.m. at the Suncoast Mall parking
lot on Highway 21 in Goderich for the
245 kilometre tour that will see eager bik-
ers checking in and picking up their cards
along the winding route. At the finish
line, the top three hands will take cash
prizes.
While the majority of Summerfest
activities are offered free -of -charge,
entrance to the refreshment tent after 8
p.m. on both Friday and Saturday will
cost $5 per person. Age of majority applies
after 8 p.m.
