There win :be times when the markets are vola e. A decline should not prompt you to sell your
atiOurities unless they no longer fit your needs. To sell investments in a declining market can mean
a finanCialloss. The best strategy to adoptis a 'buy and hold" philosophy, which means purchasing
Solid investments and keeping them over the long-term to realize growth. Many investors can tell
you the story of selling a stock the moment it took a dip, only to see its value rebound within
months of that sale.
While some stocks grab headlines with their meteoric rise, such stocks can be very risky. It's
like buying a piece of clothing that never fit but you couldn't resist the bargain. It just doesn't
make sense. Trying to time your purchase to buy a stock on the upswing almost never works.
Just ask professional money managers, who steer clear of such practices in favour of researching
investments to understand their long-term potential.
Of course, movement in the market prompts some investors to stay exclusively with fixed rate
products such as GICs because returns are guaranteed. For investors looking for growth, this
strategy sacrifices the potential for growth in favour of predictable returns. They may not provide
high enough yields to build the kind of nest egg they are seeking, and could, in fact, lose ground in
periods of high inflation.
It's critical to understand the investments you purchase. While an investor buying GICs
understands they offer more limited growth potential than stocks, those buying stocks must be
aware that their investment may be subject to fluctuations in value. Buying investments with a
long-term and diversified strategy provides you with the opportunity to balance these challenges.
Your financial advisor can help you find the right combination of investments for a portfolio
that provides reliable returns and growth potential. He or she can also offer many examples, and
reassurances, that persistence pays off even when the markets get bumpy.

The Goderich Lions greeted town politicians and staff as well as Huron -Bruce's fed-
eral and provincial representatives at Lions Harbour Park last week, where MPP Carol
Mitchell (front row, centre) anu MP Ben Lobb (back row, fourth from left) announced
$223,352 for the restoration of the park bandshell and new washrooms. The Goderich
Lions Club pledged $100,000 toward the project, and the Town of Goderich will pay
the remaining $123,352 in the joint federal -provincial -municipally funded work.

up to revamp Harbour Park

Lions Harbour Park will be getting a few
much-needed upgrades thanks to the commit-
ment of the service club itself and the municipal,
federal and provincial governments.
Under the Recreation Infrastructure Canada
(RINC) and Recreation Ontario (REC) funding
programs, both senior levels of government have
committed $223,352 for the project, with the Li-
ons donating $100,000 and the Town of Goder-
ich filling in the remainder to total of $670,056.
Both Huron -Bruce MP Ben Lobb and MPP
Carol Mitchell were on -hand to congratulate the
Lions on their commitment to the community
and to announce their senior levels of funding
Monday, June 29 - one of many projects to re-
ceive RINC and REC dollars throughout Huron
County.
Upgrades to the park will include new, acces-
sible washroom facilities as well as refurbishing
the bandshell to make it accessible.
"We realized there were a number of things
that needed to be done," said Lion Doug Bundy.
'Taking out the old washrooms, putting in bar-
rier -free washrooms that would be accessible to
people on the stage
"We started it all, it was the Lions club that
initiated it"
Lions Harbour Park has been under the stew-
ardship of the Lions for decades, and Bundy said
the club formed a separate environment commit-
tee in 2008 to address the need to upgrade the
facilities.
After meeting with architect Adolfo Spaleta,
they came up with a scaled-back plan that would
see not only upgrades to the bandshell wash-
rooms, but ramps for the bandshell and a new,
more central washroom facility.
'The washrooms in the bandstand are in ter-
rible shape and need to be replaced," Bundy said.
"We didn't believe they could be replaced in their
location."
The original bandshell was built with volun-
teer labour 35 years ago at a cost of $24,000.
Bundy said the club realized they would need
significant financial help to make the new up-
grades and approached the town, who submitted
the now -successful RINC application.
Bundy credits the Lions' work in preparing for
the project for the success of the grant approval,
and said work is slated to begin in the fall.
"We had everything done," he said. "Trouble
is, you can't do a lot of this stuff in the summer
when the park is being used."
The project is slated for completion in March,
2010.
