• All throughout Goderich and area last
week Canadians new and old celebrated the
nation's 142 birthday, the overcast skies not
putting a damper on the festivites.
Wanda Keith, Goderich's festivals and spe-
cial events coordinator reports that the coun-
try's big bash was a welcome mid -week treat.
for most area residents and visitors. It's apex,
the Canada Day parade, was a bittersweet
celebration and send-off for a large part of
Goderich's manufacturing sector.
"Them was mixed emotions through the
crowd," Keith said of the portion of the
Canada Day parade dedicated to Goderich's
road grader heritage. An eight -grader proces-
sion featuring manufacturing heavyweights
Dominion Road Machinery, Champion and
Volvo made its way around the crowded
parade route as onlookers clapped and
cheered. Others stood in reflective silence.
"A lot of people were applauding the fact
the Volvo, Champion and Dominion have
given so much to the community," Keith said.
"Others were more subdued, but in all it was
a proud moment to see that legacy roll past. I
thought it was a very nice tribute and thank -
you for the community and showed the level
of integrity on the part of employees who
held a high standard all the way to the end."
In all, nearly 40 parade entries proceeded
clockwise around The Square. Keith added
that the backwards route has been well-
received, and will likely become the norm for
future parade installments year-round.
Despite a few drizzly periods, the Canada
Day Celebration schedule was successful
executing each event. Keith' added that the
Tuesday evening fireworks display was well -
attended and comparable to previous install-
, ments.
"It was nice to see
people stick around
after the parade to
enjoy the entertain-
ment," she added.
"The Scouts did a
phenomenal job with
hot dogs, -too. Out of
142 dozen, there were
only a few packs left
over."
