It is known as the Prettiest town in Canada. Goderich is also known as "the Home of Motor Graders." The people of Goderich have been building graders for generations, often several generations from the same family. Indeed, at the entrance to Goderich, beside the welcome sign, there is an original grader from the late 19th century, designed and built in the Goderich grader plant. On Friday, June 26, Goderich grader plant ceased production for good. At the time of economic crisis, when many plants are getting closed, this might pass as just one of those "news" stories. For some of us that built in a signif- icant period of our life into this plant, it will be an emotional moment. It will be a farewell to the small town plant but also a farewell to the plant whose contribution to the development of motor graders will remain written in the grader industry history book. This plant leaves the legacy of the industry's first and oldest grader, the first motor grader and the first hy- draulic grader, the world's largest grader, the legacy of numerous inno- vations and finally the G900 line of superb motor graders. In my short 12 years within the Volvo group, Goderich plant also left the legacy of the enthusiastic people always ready to help either the Volvo sales team or the Volvo dealers. It also leaves Volvo adopted Techline system, the Gold Star Inspection Program, innovative training mate- rial and the popular Grader College. Finally, it leaves the team of lead- ers in the highest structures of Volvo company. We will be seeing Goderich built graders at job sites and on the roads for many years to come. We should remember then that they were creat- ed in a small town by several genera- tions of people that built their blood, sweat, love and expertise into the product and the plant. So, following Friday, June 26, let us not lament over the plant, rather, let us celebrate the great, long history of the Goderich plant that gave us a chance to work together with great people, colleagues and friends that shared mutual love for graders. No crisis and no plant closure can take that away. _ rummer Gnm9 s '9 4r Sornr»er Cw'pR06RAM ...available at the Membership Sevices Desk Golf Camp Ages 8-14 years, Participants will have a golf lesson with a pro and a game on the 9 -hole course every coir at Goderich Sunset Goff Course.
