American Wind Symphony concert only ten days away
This summer, the Port of Goderich wel-
comes a new and exciting musical event,
the American Wind Symphony Orchestra
July 11 and 12.
This unique floating stage, aboard
Point -Counterpoint II, will begin its North
American tour in Erie, Pennsylvania in
mid-June and then make its way along the
Great Lakes, visiting ports in Windsor,
Port Stanley, Sault Ste. Marie and then
Goderich's Main Beach.
Owned by Robert Boudreau, Point -
Counterpoint II, will be anchored in God-
erich from Thursday, July 9 to Sunday,
July 12, with the American Wind Sym-
phony Orchestra performing classical mu-
sic on the waterfront in two concerts. This
one -of -a -kind vessel also acts as a floating
art gallery and patrons will be offered a
treat for the eye as well as the ear. During
its stay, the art gallery on board will fea-
ture the work of two Goderich artists.
The silver vessel, 195 feet long and 38
feet wide was designed by renowned ar-
chitect Louis I. Kahn who in addition to
the central stage, added an art gallery and
small theatre.
Over the 52 years the American Wind
Symphony Orchestra has been perform-
ing, it has been responsible for the de-
velopment of thousands of young musi-
cians from around the world who will be
billeted with local residents during their
four-day visit.
The orchestra's audience is encouraged
to bring folding chairs to the waterfront
event and watch in fascination as the shell
of the orchestra's floating arts centre opens
and the music begins.
From that point, there is a shared mu -
fit. eeorge'g Cangtitan (bunt

The town had an opportunity back in
March to book the orchestra on its 2009
tour and with the financial backing of
council and a commitment from a small
committee of community volunteers,
Goderich was added to the point -Counter-
point II summer tour.
Goderich tourism manager, Bob Mar-
shall believes the musical event will draw
as many as 4,500 to 5,000 visitors from
the area of London north to Owen Sound..
The town had to commit $30,000 to
bring the symphony here on its tour and
Coun. Ray Hurd explained that council
chipped in with $5,000 to get the project
moving.
"We anticipate revenue from this event
of up to $10,000 and it can be then used for
beach and waterfront
improvements," he
said. "The tickets are
priced at $10 and it
represents good val-
ue. People can bring
their lawn chairs, the
Lions will provide
parking on-site and
we will have shut-
tles operating at
various areas."
The orchestra is
comprised of young
musicians up to age
30 from various
countries around
the world.
"These young

musicians are grad students or young peo-
ple who work with orchestras. They are
from the United States, Columbia and the
Orient who audition for the tour," Wanda
Keith, special events coordinator said.
"This will be an exciting event for the
town and the 45 musicians will be billeted
with local families and we're matching
them with young musicians in the com-
munity."
