The Jeremy Austin Memorial Mosquito
Tournament was on and off this weekend,
as rains on Sunday delayed the final games
by about three hours and volunteers worked
diligently to make the diamonds playable.
By about 6 p.m. Sunday night, the clouds
had let up enough to let Delaware take a
17-2 lead over Listowel in the final game of
the weekend.
The l0 -team tournament featured a most-
ly local lineup, however teams from Forest
Glen (Mississauga -area), Tecumseh and
Delaware all made the trip to Goderich as
well.
Each team played three games of round-
robin, followed by Sunday's semi-finals and
finals.
Delaware coach Marty Thody said tour-
nament convenor Annette Hoggarth and her
crew of volunteers saved the day for ball
players, after heavy rains made all but the
fastball diamond unplayable.
"What a fantastic job she did," he said.
"(Annette) rounded up the troops and got it
going. And they did it for all the right rea-
sons."
Thody also gave credit to the second -
place finishers, Listowel, saying they were a
very well-behaved and sportsmanlike team.
"They r *esented their community in a
vary weitimmunered way," he said. "They
were a good team."
He credits Delaware's win to the disci-
pline of the players, adding it is unusual for
kids that age to maintain that kind of focus
given the long delays.
"They played with very few mistakes and
played to their ability," he said.
While this year's team will be moving up
to peewee, Thody said he is recommend-
ing next year's midget Mosquitos come to
Goderich for the 2010 Jeremy Austin Me-
morial.
"We want them to go and defend, you
know?" he laughed. "Great host, great tour-
nament and I know all of the families really
enjoyed coming to Goderich."
Meanwhile, the Seahawks did not fare
so well on the diamond. Goderich started
against the soon -to -be -champs, losing to
Delaware 3-23 in Friday's tournament
opener.
Similar scores awaited them against For-
est Glen and Ilderton Saturday however,
Thody said the team and the town should be
proud of a great tournament and an excel-
lent volunteer staff.
Next up for Goderich Minor Baseball is
the Ray Duchanne Memorial Peewee Tour-
nament, held July 16-19.
