Victoria Park a popular spot as temperatures rise

The weather is hot and school is out, so it's
time to get wet at the Victoria Park splash pad
in Goderich.
Blasts of heat in Goderich last week helped
make the pad a favourite destination for chil-
dren and their families, according to parks su-
perintendent Martin Quinn.
"For a few consecutive days (last week) the
water had been on almost constantly," Quinn
told the Signal -Star. "It's all related to the warm
weather and we're very pleased with the amount
of people out enjoying it."
The automated splash pad will be operational
daily from 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. until the sum-
mer heat subsides. Use of the pad and park is
free.
Additional picnic tables have been added to
the facility pavilion in response to its use.
Although there are no posted rules in the park,
Quinn said visitors to the facility should still use
the park and pad with caution.
"There are no direct set of rules posted for
the park use," he said. "(The Parks Department)
tries to keep an eye on Goderich playgrounds
daily to ensure there's nothing dangerous in the
area, like broken glass, but beyond that every-
one should be careful and keep an eye on the
little kids."
The Victoria Park revitalization project was
met with concern from the community in 2007
when it was decided to remove the Judith Goo-
derham Memorial Park and outdoor pool in fa-
vour of the splash pad and updated play equip-
ment. The Town of Goderich proceeded with the
project, allotting $320,000 in reserves for con-
struction of the park, which included washroom
facilities, sidewalks, and renovations to the ex-
isting tennis courts. About $215,000 was put to
debt in the parks budget to be paid back over 10
years.

Walk through time
One -hundred -seventy-five years of faith were played out this weekend, as St. Peter's Parish, Goderich, hosted a
historical walkabout, reliving key moments in the church's history. More than 60 members of the church community
donned period costume for the three-day performance, created by Warren and Eleanor Robinson. Hymns, anec-
dotes and 16 original songs penned by Warren accompanied the performance, which saw approximately 350
visitors take the trip back in time between Friday and Sunday.
