Playhouse summer line-up continues with Blue Champagne
signal -star stce
It's going to be a "big summer" of
theatre at the Huron Country Playhouse
(HCP) in Grand Bend.
After successfully closing out its first
big hit, Oliver!, the playhouse plans to
keep the glowing reviews pouring in
with four more "must -see" productions,
and a fifth Canadian gem on stage at
the Playhouse II.
The season continues now through
July 4 with a production executive pro-
ducer Steve Roth says is a treat for the
eyes and ears. Conceived and written by
Ken John Grant, with musical arrange-
ments by Bob Ashley and Ted Shadbolt
and directed and choreographed by Da-
vid Connolly, Blue Champagne is tout-
ed as a musical flashback to the 1940s.
South West LHIN
"The cool thing about the produc-
tion is the music, but that's not all there
is," Roth said. "It's a beautiful looking
show. The costumes are stunning and
the cast is fabulous, it really is a great
tribute to that era."
Theatrically set as a live radio show
from an intimate rooftop lounge, part of
a series of popular "champagne broad-
casts", this heady, nostalgic tribute con-
jures up fond memories of the big band
era, jukebox hits, Hollywood musicals,
victory bonds, and the best of Broad-
way. Blue Champagne runs until July 4.
Next up on the bill, Broadway clas-
sic, Camelot, directed by Richard Ou-
zounian. Taking the stage July 8 to 25,
Roth said that the production is a mod-
ern retelling of the inspired birth and
bitter end of the legendary Knights of

the Round Table.
"It's one of those shows that hasn't
been around in a while, and you may
have forgotten how well you know
the story and songs," Roth said. "It's a
beautiful looking show that's a bit more
contemporary than the audience may
remember."
The idyllic kingdom of Camelot is
thrown into chaos when a love triangle
emerges between the beautiful Queen
Guenevere, gentle King Arthur, and
dashing French knight Lancelot. As the
production builds to its stirring climax,
the King enters a moral dilemma that
will require him to sacrifice his true
love - or his prized honour.
July 29 brings the opening of what
the HCP has become well known for,
farce comedy, with See How They Run,
a "marathon of laughs" by Philip King
and directed by Marcia Kash.
"See How They Run is perfect sum-
mer fare," Roth said. "A farce is always
a guaranteed good time."
The idyllic village of Merton-cum-
Middlewick becomes a centre of chaos
and confusion when the nosy resident
spinster, Miss Skillon, becomes con-
vinced that her beloved vicar's actress
wife is having a scandalous affair.
Desperate to expose the salacious re-
lations, a tangled web of deception and
deceit is spun as an escaped prisoner
of war, visiting bishop, rotund locum
priest, and devilishly handsome Ameri-
can actor all get caught in the race to
reveal - or conceal - their outrageous
indiscretions.
See How They Run plays until Aug. 8.
Rounding out the 2009 season, a HCP
presents a big finish with Evita, playing
Aug 12 to 29.
The Playhouse has enlisted the exper-
tise of Michael Lichtefeld, production
director •and choreographer. Lichtefeld
was part of the original Broadway pro-
duction in New York.
"What an honour, this guy knows this
production inside and out and has re-
ally made something special in Grand
Bend," Roth said.
Evita chronicles the life of Argenti-
na's infamous Eva Peron as she uses her
feminine powers to climb - and scratch
- her way up the ladder of success, first
as a model, then an actress, and finally,
as the wife of General Juan Peron.
When Peron is elected President, Eva
becomes the most powerful woman in
South America. To the poor masses, she
is adored as a saint; to her enemies, she
is viewed as a manipulative dictator.
Nevertheless, for over thirty years this
legendary woman becomes the driving
spirit that helps define a nation.
Over on the intimate stage of the
Playhouse II, a "tickle -the -ivories" mu-
sical comedy runs through the summer,
July 15 to Aug. 29.
2 Pianos 4 Hands is the riotous tale
of two Canadian boys, Ted and Rich-
ard, who share the same unorthodox
goal: concert pianist stardom.
Inspired equally by the wizardry
of classical pianists like Bach and
Beethoven, to rock 'n roll legends like
Jerry Lee Lewis, the two determined
upstarts stubbornly forge ahead with
their dream - despite the seemingly
insurmountable stumbling blocks of
pushy parents, eccentric teachers, hours
of repetitive practice, stage fright, and
the crushing pressure of competition.
As their noble quest unfolds over the
next 15 years, our two heroes slowly
mature and become aware of the gap
between the good and the very good.
True greatness, it seems, may in fact be
out of reach for the ordinary man.
